According to the HP product page for your PC, it came with Win8.1 on it, so it should work OK in Win10.
Regarding the product key, in Win8x PCs, that is embedded into the UEFI firmware of the motherboard and no longer printed on a sticker. You can retrieve that product key using this utility: Download Windows OEM Product Key Tool 1.0.0.1
Regarding upgrading to Win10, sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but the problem you're up against is that Microsoft only supplies drivers with the most basic functionality, and what you really need for FULL functionality in laptops is the specialized drivers written for the specific hardware found in laptops -- and unfortunately, there are no HP Win10 drivers for your laptop.
However, for MS-supplied drivers that aren't working well, you could consider using HP Win8 drivers -- although there's no guarantee that those drivers will work. Here's the link to the HP Product drivers and software page for Win8 for your PC: http://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/HP-2000-2d00-Notebook-PC-series/5375422/model/539341...
If that page does not show Win8x when you open it, then click CHANGE and select Windows 8x using the pulldown.
You might have to install the drivers using compatibility mode: http://www.windows10forums.com/articles/compatibility-mode.7/
Good Luck

The ONLY time a windows install will be automatically activated (other than Win10) in and OEM PC (which is what you have) is when the OS version installed exactly matches the version that came preinstalled on the PC.
So, in your case, for automatic reactivation, you would need to install the HP OEM version of Win8.1 -- and the only way to get that is by ordering HP Recovery Media (or, from a set of Recovery Disks that you made using that PC after you first started using it).
Good Luck

I'm also trying to recover the Windows 8 product key from my HP 2000-2d22DX notebook PC.
I can't run any Windows app since my original hard drive is damaged.
How can I get my Win 8 key off of the mother board, so I can reinstall Win 8 on my new hard drive?
