Every since Windows installed a couple of updates a few months ago, the laptop is constantly running very hot, sometimes almost untouchable and that's with the fan blowing full speed.   What part of the update would be causing this and how do I fix it?

Hi @totalirritated,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

When your HP laptop starts running very hot after a Windows update, it’s often due to changes in power management, background processes, or driver conflicts introduced by the update. Here’s how to try and fix the issue:

How to Fix It:

1. Check for High CPU Usage

  • Open Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc).
  • Sort by CPU and look for any processes consistently using more than 10–15%.
  • Common culprits: Windows Modules Installer Worker, Antimalware Service Executable, SearchIndexer.

2. Reinstall HP-Specific Drivers

  • Go to your laptop’s support page on Official HP® Support.
  • Reinstall:
    • Chipset drivers
    • Graphics drivers (Intel/AMD/NVIDIA)
    • HP System Event Utility
    • BIOS (if available)

Let me know your exact HP laptop model, and I can give you direct links.

3. Adjust Power Settings

  • Go to Settings > System > Power & Battery > Additional Power Settings.
  • Select HP Recommended or Power Saver.
  • In Advanced Settings, reduce Maximum Processor State to 80–90% on battery and plugged in.

4. Clean Air Vents and Fans

  • Use compressed air to clean out dust from vents.
  • Ensure the laptop is on a hard, flat surface for airflow.

5. BIOS Reset

  • Restart your laptop and press F10 to enter BIOS.
  • Choose "Restore Defaults" and save changes.

I hope this helps.

Take care, and have an amazing day!
