2 finger scroll not responding

Hello, I have been using this HP computer for about 2 years now and have now only noticed this problem. My 2 finger scroll randomly stops responding for some reason. This has happened at least 5 times over the past month and it's getting a little concerning since it is affecting my work. When I check the synaptic settings it shows that vertical/horizontal scroll isn't on (which I can't seem to turn it on manually??), which I'm not exactly sure is right. The previous times this has happened I have just clicked random buttons or searched different solutions and it magically just fixes itself. But when I revisit the same solutions the next time it does not work. Is there a more permanent solution to this problem? I don't want to get a mouse. Thanks 🙂
