so I've spent a couple days trying to get this machine to complete the update from v1803 to 1903 IIRC.

I had some error codes but with alot of patience and research was able to remove all error codes  just to end up with an" oops that didnt work"  and the long unwind of the update.

Im out of possibilities, my antivirus had been turned off yet nothing seems to complete the update.

Is this just windows or is it the hardware. I've pulled out my usb wireless card and tried the update using an ethernet. still  didnt work.

I have another HP 2570p machine and it did the update without an issue.

While doing the update online using Windows Update is generally the easiest way, it is also the most error-prone and least reliable.

I use, and recommend, the following approach:

1) Use this link to download and create Win10 install media: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

2) insert that into your PC (do NOT boot from it), find the folder containing the media, select the setup.exe file, right-click that and select Run as Administrator.  This will start an in-place Upgrade which could then take a couple of hours to complete.

If you are presented with a window asking for a product key, down near the bottom is a entry you can click to skip that. Do NOT enter a product key, as it will reuse your existing key and when you finish and get back online, Windows will automatically reactivate.

thanks for the guidance. but i have a question or two.

will this approach be a re installation of win 10 or and update?? I really dont want to end up with a reformat of my system and lose all my stuff and apps and data.   Wil it???

I have previously taken download of the win 10 file to do the update with my existing failed results I had run it from my desktop.  you want me to run it from a usb drive??

This is what is known as a Repair-Install as it rewrites the Windows system files and leaves everything else intact.  It does not erase your data or applications.

Hi WAWOOD

I spend most of the evening doing the repair install. I thought it was progressing towards resolution  but then it rolled back on itself and unwound the upgrade.

This is the error message i got.  I havent had time to research it much- its late, but saw a reference to video drivers that may need to be unistalled - but which do I keep?

"0x8007005-0x2000A installation failed in the SAFE_OS phase with an error during  Prepare_First_Boot operation."

Sorry, don't know which drivers to remove.

IF I was you, I would use these instructions to make a backup of the drivers, so you can reinstall them later.  That way now, it does not matter which ones you remove:  https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/68426-backup-restore-device-drivers-windows-10-a.html
