My laptop has 4gb ram but only 5-10% becomes available even when nothing is open. Windows defender or any other installed antivirus software takes up nearly 3.5 gb.
Uninstalled other antivirus now with only windows defender with real time protection off too it is showing a lot of usage.
I am considering ram upgrade to 8gb but still worried about how can windows defender use nearly 95% ram making computer slow and screen freezes.
Any suggestions are welcome.

Mine is using less than 300MB at any one time -- so I fail to see how yours is using that much memory.
How are you determining that RAM usage?

After minimal use only, when screen response delays I see task manager and it shows memory nearing 90-95% with wimdows defender at top. Opening resource monitor and detail processes show the data. I can't stop it even under admin account. Turned off real time protection too. Ram stays at 60-70% but on starting anything esp. Browser it goes upto 90-95% . Screen freezes few times upto the point i have to manually shut it down.
Tried
1. Windows updated
2. Drivers updated
3. Today reset the system deleting all data
Still problem persists.
Any help or suggestion is appreciated.

I don't know why your memory usage is so high. Mine does not go above 65% total, never approaching the levels of yours. I have 8GB of memory and the usage never goes above 4.7GB. Sounds like Defender is constantly running scans -- and I don't know how to shut that down since even if you disable it, it will re-enable itself automatically.
