HP ENVY 16 inch Laptop PC 16-h1000 (754G1AV)

All of these problems started randomly at the exact same time. I didn't update anything or drop the pc.

List of my issues

  • The Nvidia app won't detect my dGPU and won't download any drivers
  • Task manager won't detect my dGPU
  • Device manager won't detect my dGPU
  • HWInfo will detect my dGPU
  • A game says I dont have DX12 support even though I do
  • Time gets desynched
  • The Wi-Fi symbol on the taskbar sometimes show Ethernet instead of Wi-Fi
  • The PC runs very hot when it's closed
  • The PC often crashes when it's closed, showing a blank black screen with no fans and the keyboard lit after opening it back up
  • When rebooting after crashing this way, after waiting a minute with a black screen and only the power button glowing, the pc boots back up and shows a CMOS checksum error before restarting back into windows
  • the first time this happened instead of restarting into windows it restarted into another error page, this one showing a thermal shutdown, before finally restarting into windows

Things I've tried:

  • Running diagnostics from the HP app (all green)
  • Running diagnostics from the startup screen (all green again)
  • Resetting bios settings
  • Downgrading the bios (it wont let me)
  • Running a battery diagnostics (all green)

I suspect there's an issue with the CMOS, or maybe my battery, since my PC doesn't have an independent CMOS battery, and the CMOS is powered via the main laptop battery.

@AvaGuest, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like you're experiencing a wide range of symptoms that point to potential issues with either the CMOS, battery, or motherboard. Here are a few things to consider and further actions you can try:

Possible Causes:

  1. CMOS Battery or Power Loss:
    • Since your laptop doesn't have a dedicated CMOS battery and the CMOS is powered by the main battery, if the battery is losing power or has issues, it could cause the BIOS settings to reset (the CMOS checksum error you see on reboot).
    • The time desynchronization, along with errors in device detection and crashes when closing the laptop, could also be tied to power instability, affecting the CMOS and causing unexpected system behavior.
  2. Thermal Shutdown & Overheating:
    • The issue where your PC runs very hot when closed and experiences crashes may also indicate a cooling or thermal issue. It's possible that a malfunction in your cooling system, or the way the system handles heat when closed, is contributing to these problems.
    • This could be linked to how the system is interpreting temperature readings, which could also be affected by a BIOS issue.
  3. Driver and Hardware Detection Problems:
    • The fact that your dGPU isn't being detected by most software but is visible in HWInfo suggests there may be an issue with how the BIOS is managing hardware detection. It could be a BIOS setting or an issue with how the system initializes the GPU.
    • DX12 support issues could also be related to drivers not installing properly due to the BIOS not properly detecting the dGPU or other conflicts.

Things You Could Try:

  1. Battery & Power Check:
    • Since the CMOS is powered via the main battery, it's worth testing your battery's health. You can do this using built-in diagnostic tools or third-party software like HWInfo or BatteryCare.
    • If the battery is showing signs of degradation (e.g., not holding a charge, fluctuating voltage), it may be causing issues with CMOS retention and system stability.
  2. Battery Disconnect (if possible):
    • If the battery is removable, try disconnecting it for a few minutes and then reconnecting it to reset the power state and allow the CMOS to reset properly.
  3. Reset BIOS/CMOS Again:
    • Since you mentioned you've already reset the BIOS, it might be worth trying a more complete reset by doing a "hard reset" (disconnecting the battery, pressing the power button for 15-30 seconds, and then reconnecting everything). This can sometimes clear up deeper issues related to the CMOS.
    • Also, ensure the BIOS is fully updated. If downgrading the BIOS doesn't work, you may want to try the latest version again and see if that resolves any detected hardware issues.
  4. Thermal Management:
    • Investigate your cooling system. Use software like HWMonitor or CoreTemp to monitor the CPU/GPU temperatures and see if overheating is indeed the root cause. If temperatures are high, check the thermal paste, fan functionality, and airflow in your laptop.
  5. External GPU Detection Workaround:
    • If the dGPU is still undetected, try uninstalling all GPU-related drivers via Device Manager, restarting the system, and then reinstalling the latest drivers from the Nvidia website. This might help the system properly recognize the dGPU after a fresh driver installation.
  6. Consider a Full BIOS Recovery:
    • If none of the above work, consider doing a BIOS recovery through HP's built-in recovery methods (using a USB drive with the latest BIOS file) to rule out any BIOS corruption or settings conflicts.
  7. Check for Malware or Software Conflicts:
    • Sometimes, issues like DX12 support failure or misbehaving hardware can be software-related, so running a thorough malware scan and ensuring your system is free from any unwanted background processes could help.

Given that you’ve already tried diagnostics, BIOS resetting, and downgrading (which didn’t work), a more in-depth hardware inspection might be necessary, particularly if the battery or motherboard is involved.
