Good Day. A warm welcome to the HP community. I reviewed the case regarding issues with the computer freezing and FPS drops while gaming after a display driver update. Superb description, brilliant troubleshooting and terrific observations made before posting. Kudos to you for that.
To assist you with accurate information I would require more information regarding this:
- Did you restart your computer once and check again?
- Did you uninstall and reinstall the graphics drivers and check if it gets fixed?
For now, try these steps:
- Right-Click on start button> click device manager> expand display adapters>then select the display drivers that are listed and right-click on it and uninstall the drivers.
- Check the box that states delete the software for this device.
- Then restart the computer and update the bios chipset and graphics drivers from this link: http://hp.care/2poVkqn
Now check if the issue gets fixed. This should do the trick for you.
If the problem persists, then try these steps:
Go to Start Menu > click on Settings.
· Type performance > choose Adjust the appearance and performance of Windows.
· In the new window, go to the Visual Effects and select Adjust for best performance.
· click Apply and ok...this should do the trick.
Then try playing different games and check. If it still does not work, try playing the game at a reduced frame rate and check.
- Please uninstall the ACPI battery drivers from device manager.
- Reset all power plans to factory defaults and then select high-performance option power from power options from this link: http://hp.care/2rUUbXB
- Check this document http://hp.care/2B4vyiX to improve FPS.
- Although it is for Omen series, the steps should still be relevant for your computer also.
- Please check this link:http://hp.care/2B7qGK0 for slow performance issues with the notebook. There is a section regarding games not working correctly. It is a guided troubleshooter.
- If the issue persists, and if you have 2 AMD switchable graphics then try to ensure that switchable graphics is enabled by performing all the relevant steps from this link: http://hp.care/2tUxrv2
Also if the issue continues then perform the relevant steps from this link: http://hp.care/2pknBOM (HP OMEN PCs - Improving Latency and Reducing Lag (Windows 10) although, it is for an Omen computer the steps should work for your computer also.
Hope this helps. Let me know how this goes. I genuinely hope the issue gets resolved without hassles and the unit works great. Please reach out for any issues and I'll be there to assist you.
To simply say thanks, please click the "Thumbs Up" button to give me a Kudos to appreciate my efforts to help.
If this helps, please mark this as “Accepted Solution” as it will help several others with the same issue to get it resolved without hassles.
Take care now and have a splendid week ahead.

Hello my friend!
You shouldn't have installed the GPU driver from AMD website.
Now, uninstall the driver you've currently installed (using AMD Cleanup Utility), then download and install it directly from HP website.
Here's the link to your laptop drivers download page:
Have fun
