Hello HP Community and Support Team,

I am writing this post to address a critical and frustrating issue that affects thousands of blind and visually impaired users: the absolute lack of screen reader support in HP BIOS/UEFI interfaces.

As a blind user, managing my computer, adjusting hardware settings, securing my system, or troubleshooting boot issues requires navigating the BIOS. However, because HP's firmware completely lacks text-to-speech or screen reader integration (such as NVDA or JAWS compatibility at the firmware level), we are completely locked out of our own devices at the most fundamental level.

Accessibility is not a luxury feature or an afterthought—it is a fundamental human right. Denying visually impaired users access to their system's BIOS means we are stripped of our digital independence and autonomy.

Why hasn't HP implemented built-in screen reader support or accessible firmware interfaces yet, when other technological barriers are being broken down every day?

We demand an official response and a clear roadmap from HP to integrate screen reader accessibility into all BIOS and firmware environments. Equal access is our right, and we will not be ignored.

Regards,
A Blind Tech User

Hi @BlindTechUser20

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query.

Thank you for sharing your concerns regarding BIOS/UEFI accessibility for blind and visually impaired users. While HP provides accessibility features such as Windows Narrator, these tools do not provide general-purpose screen reader support within the BIOS/UEFI environment. At present, I am unable to confirm the availability of a built-in HP solution that provides text-to-speech functionality across BIOS interfaces or any official roadmap for its implementation.

While the sources do not cover firmware-level screen reader integration, they do detail accessibility options available at the monitor hardware and operating system levels:

  • HP Displays (Monitors): HP monitors offer an Accessibility Mode and the Speech Access Module (SAM) for Displays, which functions as an On-Screen Display (OSD) menu reader to speak monitor settings, input selection, volume, and device status aloud.
  • Operating System Level: For navigating applications and system settings once Windows loads, Microsoft provides built-in screen reading tools like Windows Narrator.

Take care and have an amazing day!
