Welcome to the HP Support Community!
I reviewed your post and I understand that the Windows spotlight feature is not working on your computer and you are unable to turn on Windows defender.
Don’t worry, I assure you I will try my best to get this sorted.
I recommend you follow the below steps and check if it helps.
- Open Settings.
- Click on Personalization.
- Click on Lock screen.
-
Under "Background," make sure Windows Spotlight is NOT selected and change the option to Picture or Slideshow.
- Use the Windows key + R keyboard shortcut to open the Run command.
-
Type the following path and click OK.
%USERPROFILE%/AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.Windows.ContentDeliveryManager_cw5n1h2txyewy\LocalState\Assets
-
Select all the files (Ctrl + A) and hit the Delete key to clear all old images (if applicable).
- Use the Windows key + R keyboard shortcut to open the Run command again.
-
Type the following path to where the Windows Spotlight settings are stored and click OK.
%USERPROFILE%/AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.Windows.ContentDeliveryManager_cw5n1h2txyewy\Settings
-
Right-click settings.dat and roaming.lock individually, then click Rename and name them settings.dat.bak and roaming.lock.bak.
- Restart your computer.
- Open Settings.
- Click on Personalization.
- Click on Lock screen.
-
Under "Background," make sure to enable Windows Spotlight.
Once you complete these steps, you can lock your PC (Windows key + L), and the Lock screen should show new Bing images.
If everything worked as expected, remember to go back to the Settings folders where Windows Spotlight stores the settings and delete the settings.dat.bak and roaming.lock.bak files.
To turn on the Windows defender follow the below steps.
Turn on Windows Defender
- In Start, open Control Panel.
- Open Administrative Tools > Edit group policy. This will open the Local Group Policy Editor in a new window.
- Open Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Defender Antivirus. The setting Turn off Windows Defender Antivirus is underneath the folders of other settings.
- Open Turn off Windows Defender Antivirus and make sure it's set to Disabled or Not configured.
Turn on Real-time Protection
Check to make sure that Real-time Protection is turned on by going to Start and searching for Windows Defender Security Center. Select Virus and threat protection settings and confirm that both Real-time protection and Cloud-delivered protection are switched to On. If these options aren't appearing, do the following to enable them:
- In Start, open Control Panel.
- Open Administrative Tools > Edit group policy. This will open the Local Group Policy Editor in a new window.
- Open Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Defender Security Center > Virus and threat protection.
- Open the setting Virus and threat protection area and set it to Disabled.
Let me know how it goes and you have a great day!
