Hello,

I had my laptop used for few months during my post graduate course. It was not used for a while and when I opened it, battery stucked at 80%.

Now battery is stucked at 70%. Laptop is less than 2 years old. When battery first stucked at 80%, it was around 15 months after purchase.

Unfortunately, there is no HP support in my location. This is frustrating as this laptop was only used for few months and there is no service support.

Can somebody help me on this please. Thank you

Hi @RedCarl

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

Thanks for sharing your experience—it's genuinely frustrating to see a relatively new laptop struggle with battery charging, especially when support options are limited.

You're not alone in facing this issue, and there are a few targeted steps you can try to restore full charging functionality.

Step-by-Step Fix for Battery Charging Stuck at 70–80%

1. Check for Battery Health Management Settings

Some HP laptops include a battery protection feature that limits charging to extend battery lifespan.

  • Open HP Command Center or HP Power Manager (if installed).
  • Look for settings like Battery Health Manager or Smart Charging.
  • If enabled, switch to "Let HP manage my battery health" or disable the limiter.

If you don’t have these apps installed, you can download them from HP’s support site: HP Software and Driver Downloads

2. Run HP Battery Diagnostics

  • Restart your laptop and press Esc repeatedly → choose F2 for diagnostics.
  • Run the Battery Test under Component Tests.
  • This will check battery condition and charging behavior.

HP Battery Test Guide

3. Reset Battery Drivers

  • Open Device Manager (press Windows + X → Device Manager).
  • Expand Batteries.
  • Right-click Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery → select Uninstall device.
  • Restart your laptop—Windows will reinstall the driver automatically.

4. Calibrate the Battery

  • Charge the battery to its maximum (even if stuck at 70%).
  • Disconnect the charger and let the battery drain completely until the laptop shuts down.
  • Recharge fully without interruption.
  • This helps recalibrate the battery sensor.

5. Update BIOS and Chipset Drivers

  • Visit your laptop’s support page and install the latest BIOS and chipset updates: HP BIOS Update Guide

You’ve clearly taken good care of your device, and it’s disappointing to face this kind of issue so early.

Let’s make sure your laptop continues to serve you well without unnecessary expense.

Hello Hawks_eye,

Thank you for your reply and for suggestion of possible solutions; however I did try all the options you suggested but to no avail, still facing same issue.

I tried all the step-by-step fix, and though I am not computer expert, I have some good knowledge on how to do this procedure.

Step 1: There is a power manager, but I can not find a setting such as smart charging that limit the charge to 80%.

Anyway the limit I can have varies from 70 to 80%. It can go up to 83% if I plug and unplug the power charger, but after discharging, limit go back to 79-80%.

Step 2: I did run the battery test under component test, the result is normal when battery is still charging. However if you perform the test when the battery is stuck at 70-80%, it says error. Fuse is blown or something.

Step 3: I tried uninstalling Battery ACPI and restarting the laptop twice but still the same.

Step 4: I tried several times to run the laptop until battery is empty and charge unti full according to the charging light. Upon turning on, battery percentage still between 70-80%.

Step5: I updated BIOS and still no changes.

I DID another step, I reset rhe computer settings without deleting personal files and no changes.

Step6 and most frustrating, I tried contacting customer support online but not existing. It is trying to divert me to here on HP community support. There is even no HP service center or support on our location but HP has wide array of products being sold here. I am thinking of how I can further complain on this so HP sales here will be refrained. So frustrating, laptop is faulty for just few months of use.

@RedCarl

You are Welcome!

Thank you for your detailed follow-up, and I’m truly sorry this battery issue continues to persist despite your thorough efforts. It’s incredibly frustrating when a device that’s still relatively new begins to show signs of hardware failure—especially when support options feel out of reach.

Based on everything you’ve tried, including BIOS updates, ACPI driver resets, full discharges, and even a system reset, the fact that the battery test reports a blown fuse when stuck at 70–80% strongly suggests a hardware-level fault within the battery pack itself. This could be a safety-triggered cutoff or a damaged cell preventing full charge recognition.

It looks like we may have to raise a service order for the same.

I'm sending you a private message to guide you on the next steps.

If this resolves your issue, kindly mark this post as "Accepted Solution" and click "Yes" if it was helpful.

Take care and have a great day!
