HP 17.3 inch Laptop PC 17-c1000 (4B770AV)
Microsoft Windows 11

I bought a HP laptop used or refurbished off Ebay with Windows 11 upgraded to 16gbs of RAM, and from HDD to SSD. It has a new tag on the back that says model 17-CN1053CL. It was a 17-cn1053cl, Prod ID 4S324UA#ABA, and the serial number is different but this was blacked out. Do you know why? The MOBO is HP89B7. I reformatted and installed Windows 10 but couldn’t find mouse, wifi, touchpad, and bluetooth drivers. The laptop was not detected by HP autodetect. I noticed that if I left it unplugged overnight it drains that battery and feels warm by where the cpu is. If I completely shut it down it doesn’t do it. I found this forum and updated the bios thinking that might help but it didn’t. If I run Linux on it it does the same thing. The current bios is AMI F.24. Do you have any idea what could cause this problem? Thanks!

Hi tdevans,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I see that you are facing issues with your HP 17.3 Inch Laptop PC 17-C1000 (4B770AV)  Battery issue

I suggest that you follow the steps.

Step 1

Please try the following Troubleshoots steps.

1.    Turn off the Unit.

2.    Disconnect the AC adapter.

3.    Remove any discs from the disc drive.

4.    Remove memory cards from the card reader slot.

5.    Disconnect all nonessential peripheral devices, such as printers, scanners, external hard drives, and USB flash drives.

6.    Disconnect the AC adapter press and hold the power button for approximately 15 seconds.

7.    Reconnect the AC adapter, and then turn on the computer.

Step 2

Turn off the unit and please press and hold the Windows key + letter B key and the power button together for 30 seconds after 30 seconds, 1st release the power button but keep holding the Windows key and B key for ten more seconds and then release these two keys If done correctly, you will see the display flashing once. Please attempt it thrice as this step and  Restart the unit

Step3

The unit has to be turned off, Press Win+ V while holding these two keys then Press the Power button, continue to hold all three keys for 30 seconds and then release the Power button first and then release these two keys Please attempt it thrice  and then you may get a Pop-Up CMOS Check and it will restart the unit

Even if you don't get a Pop-up restart the unit manually after 3 attempts.

Run the Fast Test (about 4 minutes)

When Windows doesn't start, begin the hardware diagnostics by running the Fast Test. The Fast Test is separated into a 1st pass and 2nd pass, with each pass running multiple tests.

  1. Hold the power button for at least five seconds to turn off the computer.
  2. Turn on the computer and immediately press esc repeatedly, about once every second. When the menu appears, press the f2 key.
  3. On the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics (UEFI) main menu, click System Tests.

If the diagnostics are not available when using the F2 menu, run the diagnostics from a USB drive. To download the latest version of the diagnostics, go to the HP Hardware Diagnostics website. For instructions, see HP PCs - Testing for hardware failures in Windows 10.

  1. Click Fast Test > Run once.

While the test is running, the time remaining and the test result for each component is displayed on the screen.

  • If a component fails a test, write down the failure ID (24-digit code) for when you contact HP Customer Support. The information is also available in Test Logs on the main menu.
  • If no test fails, click Continue > Run once to run the 2nd Pass of the System Fast Test.
  1. If a component fails a test, write down the failure ID (24-digit code) for when you contact HP Customer Support. The information is also available in Test Logs on the main menu.

failure ID (24-digit code) then it's a Hardware issue

Hello, thank you for your help. However, after reading everything carefully and following your instructions, the problem has not been resolved. When I ran the 1st and 2nd pass tests there were no component failures. Also, there were 2 links in your instructions that were bad, the one to calibrate the battery and the one to update the bios and drivers are broken. However, I checked and the bios version is F.24. Is this the right version for this laptop??? The laptop was not detected by HP autodetect. Why is this??? Please read my original post again. Why was the serial number changed after it was refurbished? In sleep mode the light is fading in and out as it should yet if left in sleep mode it runs that battery down very quickly and if left overnight is dead in the morning. Please help me fix this problem! Thanks!

Hi @tdevans,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If your HP 17.3 Inch Laptop PC's battery is draining rapidly when it's in sleep mode, there are several potential causes and solutions you can try to address the issue:

Windows Updates: Ensure that your Windows operating system is up to date. Sometimes, updates can address power management issues.

Check Power Settings:

  • Go to "Control Panel" > "Power Options."
  • Make sure you are using a balanced power plan.
  • Click on "Change plan settings" next to your selected plan.
  • Click on "Change advanced power settings."
  • Review the settings, especially the ones under "Sleep" and "Hibernate" and adjust them as needed. For example, you can set "Sleep after" to a longer duration.

Background Apps: Some background apps or processes can prevent your laptop from entering a deep sleep state. Check your system's task manager and close any unnecessary apps or processes.

Device Manager:

  • Open the "Device Manager" by right-clicking the Start button and selecting it.
  • Expand the "Network adapters" section and right-click on your Wi-Fi adapter.
  • Go to the "Power Management" tab and uncheck the option that says, "Allow this device to wake the computer."

BIOS/UEFI Settings: Sometimes, BIOS/UEFI settings can affect power management. Check if there are any options related to sleep mode or power management and make sure they are configured correctly.

Drivers: Ensure that all your device drivers are up to date. You can download the latest drivers from the HP website.

Battery Report:

  • Open a Command Prompt as an administrator.
  • Type "powercfg /batteryreport" (without quotes) and press Enter. This generates a battery report that can help you identify any issues.

Malware and Background Processes: Run a malware scan to check if any malicious software is running in the background, preventing your laptop from sleeping properly.

Hibernation: Consider using hibernation mode instead of sleep mode if you don't need to quickly resume your work. Hibernation uses less power.

Battery Calibration: Occasionally, calibrating your laptop's battery can help. Fully charge the battery, use it until it's nearly empty, and then recharge it to 100%.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
