HP Spectre x360 - 13t-ac000 CTO

My 2017 Spectre x360 will no longer charge after a software update last night (2024-11 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 22H2 for x64-based

Systems (KB5046613)). The HP Hardware Diagnostic tool gve me a failure ID for the battery and stated that “The test found a problem with the battery and it may need to be replaced,” despite this battery being just over a year old. I swapped it out for another battery, but that one wouldn’t charge either, so the problem must be elsewhere. Any help is appreciated.

Just as an update, I left it to charge overnight and the charge status light is white, indicating that it’s fully charged. The battery percentage displayed on the screen, however, says 30%.

Hi @tunatime,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like your HP Spectre x360 is experiencing a software conflict or power management issue following the recent Windows update. Here's a step-by-step guide to troubleshoot the situation.

Perform a Hard Reset

  • Power off the laptop completely.
  • Disconnect the power adapter.
  • Hold the power button down for 15-20 seconds to reset the system and drain any residual power.
  • Reconnect the power adapter and power on the laptop.

Uninstall the Problematic Update

Since the issue occurred after the recent update, it could be related to a change in the system's power management:

  • Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
  • Select View Update History, then click Uninstall Updates.
  • Find and uninstall the 2024-11 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 22H2 (KB5046613).
  • Restart your laptop to see if this resolves the issue.

Update or Reinstall Battery Drivers

Sometimes, updates can cause driver issues:

  • Open Device Manager (right-click the Start button and select Device Manager).
  • Expand Batteries and right-click on Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery. Choose Uninstall device.
  • Restart the laptop. Windows should automatically reinstall the drivers upon reboot.

Check Battery Health Using HP Support Assistant

  • If you haven't already, download and run the HP Support Assistant software.
  • It might provide more insights into the battery status, including any specific warnings or error codes related to the battery.

Recalibrate the Battery

  • Plug in the laptop and let it charge to 100%.
  • Once fully charged, unplug it and let the battery drain down to about 5-10%.
  • Plug it back in and allow it to charge to 100% again. This can help recalibrate the battery percentage reading.

Check the Power Adapter and Charging Port

  • Ensure the power adapter is functioning correctly by testing it with another device if possible.
  • Inspect the charging port for any debris or damage.

Check Battery Health with HP Hardware Diagnostics (Outside Windows)

  • Turn off the laptop, then power it on while pressing Esc repeatedly.
  • Select F2 to run HP Hardware Diagnostics.
  • Run the battery test again to see if it provides more specific information or recommendations.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
