Brightness Keys F2 & F3 keys not working

Hi,

If only the brightness keys F2/F3 are not working, I would first check whether the function/action key mode is the issue.

Please try:

  1. Press Fn + F2 and Fn + F3 instead of only F2/F3.
  2. Check the Fn/action key setting in BIOS:
    • Turn off the laptop.
    • Turn it on and repeatedly press F10 to enter BIOS Setup.
    • Look for Action Keys Mode, Hotkeys, or Fn Key Switch.
    • Change the setting, save, and restart.

HP guide for Fn/action keys:
https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/ish_5878386-5878448-16

  1. Check whether brightness can be changed from Windows:
    Settings > System > Display > Brightness

If Windows brightness control works but F2/F3 do not, the issue is likely related to hotkey/function-key software.

  1. Update BIOS, graphics driver, chipset driver, and HP hotkey-related software from HP Support for the exact laptop model:
    https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/laptops

HP also recommends updating graphics/BIOS when troubleshooting brightness or display control issues:
https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/ish_7096250-7096363-16

  1. Test the keyboard:
    • Do other F-keys work, such as volume or mute?
    • Does F2/F3 work with Fn?
    • Does an external keyboard work?

If brightness cannot be changed from Windows settings either, then the issue is more likely graphics/display-driver related rather than just the keyboard.
