Hi @Bighorn1, Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
The message you’re seeing appears to be a Windows Update entry related to an HP USB driver update from October 7, 2018. This could indicate:
- A Pending Driver Update – Windows may be trying to install an older driver for your HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M479fdw.
- A Driver Conflict – If you recently updated or reinstalled drivers, Windows might be reverting to an older version.
- An Incomplete or Failed Update – If Windows is stuck showing this message, the driver update might not have completed properly.
Recommended Fixes:
1. Check Installed Drivers
- Open Device Manager (Win + X → Device Manager).
- Expand Universal Serial Bus controllers and Printers.
- Look for any yellow warning icons or entries related to HP.
- Right-click the printer → Update driver → Search automatically.
2. Install the Latest HP Drivers
- Download and install the latest HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M479fdw drivers from the official HP website: Official HP® Support
Install HP Smart or Full Feature Drivers for better compatibility.
3. Remove Old USB Driver
- In Device Manager, locate Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- Right-click any HP-related USB driver → Uninstall device.
- Restart your PC, and Windows should reinstall the necessary drivers.
4. Check Windows Update
- Go to Settings → Windows Update.
- Click Check for updates.
- If the update is stuck, click View update history → Uninstall updates, then remove any problematic HP updates.
5. Run the HP Print and Scan Doctor
- Download from: Official HP Print and Scan Doctor for Windows | Free Download hppsdr.exe
- Run the tool to diagnose and fix driver-related issue.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
