I bought this HP laptop only one month ago (HP ProBook 440 14 inch G11 Notebook PC (8Z4M3AV)). At first, it worked normally, but recently the built-in camera (HP FHD Camera) stopped working. In Device Manager the camera still appears, but it always shows the error message: “This hardware device is not connected to the computer. (00xA00F4244 NoCamerasAreAttached).”

I have already tried several troubleshooting steps. I restarted the computer, checked the privacy and security settings in Windows to make sure camera access is enabled, showed hidden devices in Device Manager, and even removed and reinstalled the device and its drivers with the help of IT support at my school. I also checked the BIOS but found no option to enable or disable the camera. I tried other suggestions I found online, including resetting the USB controllers, but the camera still does not work and always shows Code 00xA00F4244.

The laptop is very new and only a month old. The problem started recently without any clear reason. In addition to the camera issue, the whole system sometimes lags, even when I am just using a web browser. There is no physical camera enable/disable button on my keyboard, and although the manual mentions a possible physical switch, I cannot find it on my device.

Could this be a hardware issue with the camera module or its cable, or is there still a way to restore the integrated camera through BIOS, firmware, or software? Are there any official HP updates (BIOS or drivers) or specific steps you recommend before I send the laptop in for service?

Thank you for reaching out!

That’s an excellent and detailed summary of the issue, and given all the steps you’ve already taken, it does sound like you’ve ruled out most of the common software causes. Let’s go through a structured approach to confirm whether this is indeed a hardware issue or something that can still be resolved through HP updates or firmware.

1. Check BIOS Version and Settings

  • Restart your laptop and press Esc → F10 to open the BIOS setup.

  • Go to Advanced → Built-in Device Options or Security → I/O Port Options (depending on the BIOS version).

  • Ensure the Camera or Integrated Webcam option is enabled.

  • Press F10 to save and exit.

  • While in BIOS, note the BIOS version and date (e.g., 01.04.00 Rev.A).

  • Then visit the HP Support page for ProBook 440 G11Software and Drivers → check if a newer BIOS or Camera Driver is available.

2. Update or Reinstall the HP Camera Driver

  • In Device Manager, expand Cameras → right-click your camera → Properties → Details → Hardware IDs.

  • Note the Vendor and Device IDs (e.g., VID_0BDA&PID_58F2).

  • Search this ID on the HP driver page or install the recommended updates through HP Support Assistant → Updates → Check for updates and messages.

  • If it appears as a USB Video Device, uninstall it and scan for hardware changes again.

3. Run HP Hardware Diagnostics (UEFI)
This helps determine if the camera issue is hardware-related:

  • Shut down the laptop.

  • Power on and press Esc repeatedly, then F2 for HP PC Hardware Diagnostics (UEFI).

  • Go to Component Tests → Camera Test.

    • If it fails or says No camera detected, it’s likely a hardware fault (camera module or cable).

    • If it passes, the issue is within Windows (driver or privacy control).

Please try these steps and let us know the result. If the camera test fails, we’ll guide you through the next steps to get your laptop serviced under warranty and ensure it’s back up and running smoothly.
