Your service manual (on page 2) states your model supports 32 GB (2x 16 GB) DDR4-2400.

Maintenance and Service Guide HP EliteBook 840 G6 Notebook PCHP EliteBook 846 G6 Notebook PC

 

You can install memory like this.

Crucial RAM 16GB DDR4 2400 MHz CL17 Desktop Memory CT16G4DFD824A at Amazon.com

 

Memory with higher speed like DDR4-2666 or 3200 can be used but will downclock to 2400 because that is the max speed your system supports.
