HP ENVY Laptop PC 17-cg1000 (19S97AV)
Microsoft Windows 11

I am having a small but frustrating issue with a new HP Envy laptop (17-cg1075cl). It is running Windows 11 and all drivers, firmware, and Microsoft software are up to date. It is still under warranty through March 1, 2023.

There are times when I need to use caps lock for extended periods, but the caps lock key turns itself off seemingly at random. After booting the PC and then eventually turning on caps lock by pressing the key, it should stay on until the key is pressed again or the system is rebooted. But it turns off many times throughout the day with no actions that should cause it.

I believe that the issue is linked to the Touch Keyboard (not the on-screen keyboard in accessibility). There is some issue between the hardware and OS that occasionally causes the physical keyboard not to be recognized for a split second, which activates the Touch Keyboard. It goes away just as fast. But when this occurs, it deactivates caps lock.

I have checked all relevant settings and the caps lock key should only be turned off when the key is pressed (not shift), and the Touch Keyboard should not be appearing when the physical keyboard is not detected. But the issue occurs nonetheless.

The long-term solution would be to make sure that the physical keyboard and/or USB controller drivers are right or to address this via a Windows update. But in the meantime, I am hoping to permanently disable the Touch Keyboard in the hope that it will solve the issue.

I see from this article that it is not advised to disable the Touch Keyboard service: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/topic/prevent-the-touch-keyboard-from-appearing-e2b05375-908d-45... . Is it actually likely that this would cause other issues? I don't use handwriting features, or even the touchscreen itself very much.

Alternatively, is there a better method to completely disable the Touch Keyboard that you're aware of? Or better yet, do you know a simple way to ensure that the caps lock remains on until it is pressed, since that's the actual problem.

Thanks!

I have a few recommendations

  • Update your Notebook computer to the latest BIOS from HP.COM.

  • Try doing Reset PC Keep my files from windows and check if it works.
