It just sat around, and never got the Microsoft updates when they were offered

Don't worry as I'll be glad to help,

To get the answer to this question, this product  Compaq Presario CQ50-130US has reached the end of support life. The firmware or drivers are not available for windows. I would suggest you may consider upgrading the computer with the latest Windows 11 OS in that way you will not face any driver-related issues.
