I tried having HP detect my laptop but for some reason it keeps trying for a while, so I copied the model number and it came up in the drop down as a selectable option and from there I forgot it about it noticing it probably was going to take awhile. a few hours later it was still searching. I tried it again today and its still searching.

When detect fails for any reason, manually search for supported drivers for your version of the Operating System.

What?

(At this writing) Detect my Drivers can fail when there is a conflict in the process.

For example,

If your computer is running a version of the Operating System that is not supported, the search can flounder (balk, hang, spin, fail in various ways).

The search program is perhaps not smart enough to exit a failed search after a set amount of time --

If the operator (you) does not stop the search, the search can continue spinning.

The "Detect" drivers search can fail in this way as can the HP Support Assistant.

The "fix" to a failed, hanging, stuck search is to interrupt the process - that is, interrupt the failed search.

What else?

Detect might fail if the general Windows Operating System is detected but the support site includes specific versions of that Operating System that require manual selection.

HP Support Assistant can fail to find the driver list when there are specific versions of the Operating System that must be selected.

If you have not done so,

If your system is running a supported version of Windows,

Open category Software and Drivers

Select the Operating System (left)

Select the Version (right)

Wait for the driver list to open

NOTES

  • If a specific version is list is not available, does not work, or is not applicable, select the "plain" version number.
  • Version not supported?  Search will not find drivers.

Welcome to the HP Community Forum.

If the results don't come back in a few minutes - hours or days won't make it better.

It's possible the mystery computer is no longer supported.

For example, about ten years after introduction, many devices are retired -- all the documentation is removed from HP sites.

Is your HP Product “vintage?  (Ten years of age or older)

Typically, HP stops supporting consumer products after ten years.  Read the policy and find out if your HP device is on the list. “EOL”

What if?

What if device is young, well known, and should be found?

It's possible your browser is in need of having the cache / cookies cleaned.

Truth is, we don't know why you cannot find an unknown computer.

Tell us the exact model name and someone can check ...
