I have an older HP laptop that's slow to boot up and runs very slowly overall. I've been trying different suggestions to get it moving. OS is Windows 11-64 bit. I run Windows Update and use the Windows "optimize" function and clear cookies, cache, etc regularly. I usually save most files in the cloud or on an external drive. The laptop is usually connected via ethernet cable to my ATT gateway. I only use wireless connection occasionally. ATT claims that my connection speed is the fastest available.
One suggestion from another online forum was to make sure drivers, especially for the graphics card, are updated which I've been doing over the last couple days. But, I can't tell if Windows Update has already updated the driver for the embedded AMD 530 series graphics card. When I searched the AMD website, the message was that I have an embedded driver so I need to check the HP website for the driver. However, the HP support website doesn't even show Windows 11 as an OS option when I search for the driver so I 'm stuck, I haven't been able to find the right drivers on either the AMD or HP websites.
Any other suggestions to finding out if the AMD chip driver is up-to-date or if it's even the problem with my slow-poke laptop?
Other suggestions to get my computer running faster?

Welcome to our HP Community forum!
The first red flag, so to speak, is the fact that your HP Notebook - 17-by0061st was first released six years ago in October 2018.
This actually may be the reason why your HP Notebook 17-by0061st is struggling with performance, and I’d be happy to help you troubleshoot the issue! Based on your description, here are a few key areas to check and potential fixes that could significantly improve your laptop’s speed.
1. Likely Causes of Slow Performance:
The most common reasons your laptop may be running slowly:
✔ Hard Drive vs. SSD – If your laptop still has the original 5400 RPM hard drive, that’s likely the biggest bottleneck. Upgrading to an SSD would dramatically improve boot times and overall speed.
✔ RAM Limitation – If your system has 4GB of RAM, Windows 11 is pushing it to its limits. Upgrading to 8GB or better still 16GB would make a big difference!
✔ Background Processes & Startup Apps – Unnecessary startup apps could be slowing your system down.
✔ Driver Updates (Especially Graphics) – You mentioned an AMD Radeon 530, but this laptop originally came with an Intel Core i3-8130U, which includes Intel UHD Graphics 620. If your laptop does have the Radeon 530, you may need to manually update the drivers. Otherwise, your system relies on Intel’s graphics drivers.
2. How to Fix It:
🔹Upgrade to an SSD (If Still Using an HDD) – Best Performance Boost
A 5400 RPM HDD is very slow, especially for Windows 11. Upgrading to an SSD would make your laptop much faster. To check if you have an HDD:
- Open Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc) → Performance tab → Disk
- If it says "HDD," then upgrading to an SSD will significantly improve boot time and responsiveness.
🔹Check & Upgrade RAM (If 4GB)
- Press Win + X → Task Manager → Performance tab → Memory
- If total RAM is 4GB, upgrading to 8GB or 16GB would prevent slowdowns caused by memory limitations.
🔹Reduce Startup & Background Programs
- Disable Startup Apps:
- Open Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc) → Startup tab
- Disable unnecessary apps (e.g., OneDrive if not used, Teams, etc.)
- Disable Background Apps:
- Settings → Apps → Startup Apps → Disable anything unnecessary.
🔹Update Graphics Drivers (Intel UHD 620 or AMD Radeon 530, If Present)
If your laptop has only Intel UHD Graphics 620:
- Check for driver updates via Windows Update:
- Settings → Windows Update → Advanced options → Optional updates
- Use Intel’s Driver & Support Assistant to get the latest drivers:
If your laptop does have the AMD Radeon 530:
- Open Device Manager (Win + X → Device Manager → Display Adapters)
- Check if AMD Radeon 530 is listed alongside Intel UHD Graphics 620
- Update the driver from:
- Windows Update (Settings → Windows Update → Optional updates)
- HP’s Support Page (even if it only lists Windows 10 drivers, they may still work)
- AMD’s website (if available, though embedded AMD drivers often require HP’s versions)
🔹Update Chipset & Storage Drivers
Even if HP doesn’t list Windows 11 drivers, installing the latest Windows 10 chipset and storage drivers from HP’s support page can improve stability.
🔹Set Power Mode to High Performance
- Go to Settings → System → Power & Sleep → Additional Power Settings
- Select High Performance (if available).
🔹Free Up Storage Space (If C: Drive Is Almost Full)
- Press Win + E → This PC → Check Available Space on C:
- If your drive is nearly full, clear unnecessary files or move data to an external drive.
3. Final Thoughts:
✔ If your laptop is still using an HDD, upgrading to an SSD will provide the most noticeable improvement.
✔ If your RAM is only 4GB, increasing it to 8GB or 16GB will significantly help.
✔ Graphics driver updates are important, but they’re unlikely to be the main cause of slow boot times.
Let me know if you need help finding the right upgrade parts or installation steps! 😊

Dear NonSequitur777,
Thank you so much for the comprehensive reply. I've been going thru it slowly, step by step, when I have the time and confirmed much of what you advised. I agree w/your advice that replacing the HDD with a SSD is the best solution to the issues I've been having. Unfortunately, I don't have the time or expertise to do it myself. I bought the laptop from a retailer that doesn't offer follow on service. Do you have any advice for finding the best HP laptop service in my area?
