HP Rechargeable MPP 2.0 Tilt Pen
Microsoft Windows 11

I have an HP MPP 2 tilt pen and an Omnibook 7 and for some reason the pen isn't being recognized by my computer, I can't find any way to get this pen to connect and most of the info out there is for a previous version of this pen. I really want to use this. What do i need to do? holding the buttons wont help, it's fully charged, but the lights aren't showing up outside of when it's charged. How do i get this to connect?????

Hi @BigJones,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query.

I am sorry to hear that If your HP MPP 2.0 Tilt Pen isn't connecting to your HP device, there are a few steps you can try to troubleshoot the issue:

The "Static Discharge" Fix:

  • Sometimes the laptop screen builds up static that prevents pen recognition.
  • Shut down the OmniBook.
  • Unplug the charger.
  • Hold the Power button for a full 30 seconds.

Bluetooth Troubleshooting:

  • If your pen connects via Bluetooth, make sure Bluetooth is enabled on your device.
  • Remove any other, unnecessary Bluetooth devices that might interfere with the pen's connection.
  • Restart the Bluetooth service: Go to Device Manager > Bluetooth, and right-click on the Bluetooth device and choose "Disable". After a moment, enable it again.

Right-click the Start button and select Device Manager.

  • Expand Human Interface Devices.
  • Look for HID-compliant pen
  • If it has a yellow exclamation mark or is missing, you may need to run Windows Update (specifically "Optional Updates") or use the HP Support Assistant app pre-installed on your laptop to grab the latest "Intel Integrated Sensor Hub" driver.

Turn it back on and try the pen again.

Take care and have an amazing day!

none of these worked sadly and i don't even see HID compliant pen in my devices. Is it time for me to consider i might have a defective pen and get it replaced?

i would love to know if i need to return my pen or if there's anything else i should do first

Hi @BigJones

We sincerely thank you for your patience and co-operation during this troubleshooting process.

I understand how disappointing it feels when the pen refuses to connect even after you’ve tried the earlier steps and checked Device Manager.

Thank you for carefully testing those suggestions—it helps us narrow down what’s left to try before considering replacement. Let’s go through a few more targeted checks together:

Step 1: Confirm Pen Compatibility

  • The HP MPP 2.0 Tilt Pen requires Microsoft Pen Protocol (MPP) support on the device.
  • Your Omnibook 7 must have a touchscreen that supports active pen input, not just capacitive touch.
  • To verify: Go to Settings > Devices > Pen & Windows Ink. If you see options for handwriting and pen shortcuts, the hardware supports MPP.

Step 2: Check Windows Ink Services

  • Press Win + R, type services.msc, and press Enter.
  • Locate Human Interface Device Service and TabletInputService.
  • Ensure both are set to Automatic and are running. Restart them if necessary.

Step 3: Update Sensor Hub and Touch Drivers

  • Visit the HP driver page for your Omnibook 7:
    HP Omnibook Drivers & Software
  • Download and install the Intel Integrated Sensor Hub driver and Touchscreen driver.
  • Restart the system after installation.

Step 4: Pairing the Pen

  • The HP MPP 2.0 Tilt Pen connects via Bluetooth for button functions.
  • Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Add device > Bluetooth.
  • Hold the top button on the pen for 5 seconds until the LED blinks, then select the pen from the list.
  • If the LED does not blink, the pen may not be entering pairing mode.

Step 5: Hardware Check

  • Since the LED only shows when charging and not during pairing, test the pen on another MPP‑compatible HP device if available.
  • If it fails to respond there too, the pen hardware may indeed be defective.

If after updating drivers and confirming Windows Ink services the pen still does not appear in Bluetooth or HID devices, and the LED never blinks outside charging, then the pen hardware is most likely at fault. Testing it on another MPP‑compatible device is the best way to confirm before considering replacement.

Tabletinputservice doesn't seem to exist on my device.
the drivers you mentioned aren't listed on the link you sent no matter what i did and when i found the intel integrated sensor hub driver it said my device is not compatible.
My pen also doesn't have a top button and i'm getting increasingly frustrated at the number of threads i am seeing on your site and other places that tell me to push a button that does not and has never existed on the pen i am currently using.

(it's also shocking how many threads i see where this problem is left unresolved)
I don't have another HP compatible device that supports the MPP2.0 protocol so i can't test that part. I do however know the touchscreen works fine as far as i can tell so i don't know why this pen wont connect.

Thanks for replying @BigJones

I hear your frustration—it sounds like you’re still unsure whether the issue is with the HP MPP 2 Tilt Pen itself or with your Omnibook 7’s compatibility. Let’s clarify that point directly, because it’s the key to knowing whether you should continue troubleshooting or consider replacement.

The HP MPP 2 Tilt Pen will only work on devices that support Microsoft Pen Protocol (MPP). Many touchscreens are capacitive only (finger touch, no active stylus input). If your Omnibook 7 falls into that category, the pen simply won’t be recognized, no matter what drivers or updates you install.

Here’s how you can confirm:

  • On your laptop, go to Settings > Devices > Pen & Windows Ink.
  • If you see options for handwriting, pen shortcuts, or pressure sensitivity, your device supports MPP.
  • If those options are missing, the touchscreen is capacitive only, and the pen cannot connect.

Since you mentioned the LED only lights up when charging and never enters pairing mode, and HID‑compliant pen doesn’t appear in Device Manager, this strongly suggests either:

  1. The device does not support MPP pens, or
  2. The pen hardware itself is defective.

If you’d like, I can help you check the exact specifications of your Omnibook 7 model to confirm whether it supports MPP pens. That way you’ll know for certain whether the issue is compatibility or a faulty pen.

Take care, and have an amazing day!
