I have a list of updates to various parts of my EliteBook that I can't seem to install. Every time I try to install them, it will go through up to the part where the software is supposed to be installed then suddenly the installation quits. I've resarted and shutdown to no avail. Not sure what to do to fix it.

You are welcome.
You can choose to download only.
or
After "Check for Updates" provides the results, read the list, decide what you want to install (you have the option to clear the box next to any update you want to remove for the current installation run), click to install.
The download / installation process can take a while (for example, perhaps four to as much as ten minutes); be patient with the process.
After the installation is complete, a window will pop up with the results of the installation. When / if necessary to complete the installation, you will be advised that the computer needs to be restarted.

If you are not yet doing so, consider using the Softpaq Download Manager (SDM) to manage and install your HP software and updates.

Business class computers support a robust, comprehensive software tool for updating and managing HP Software and Drivers: Softpaq Download Manager (SDM)
HP SoftPaq Download Manager (SDM)
4.4.0 | sp87158 | 04/20/2018 | Windows (Vista, 7, 8, 8.1, 10) |

If an update will not install no matter what you do, consider hiding it.
If, when you "Check for Updates" a BIOS update is included in the list, please NOTE:
SDM is smart software that can manage and install the BIOS update along with the others in the list. Nonetheless, consider "unchecking" the BIOS updates until after you have installed the other updates. In other words, install everything else, then come back and install the BIOS update by itself. If this seems like an over abundance of caution, you are free to ignore the advice. Some of us are extra careful about BIOS updates and I fall right at the top of that list. Smiling.
SDM can take a while to install more than one update (ten minutes or more) - be patient with the process.
After the initial "download" process, the main SDM window disappears and the little installing windows show up on the desktop (screen). After the updates are installed, a window will pop up to indicate the installation is done and whether or not it is recommended that you Restart the computer.
At this writing:
Under no circumstances that I can think of should you allow the HP Support Assistant to install a BIOS update. Best to install the update manually (download-save-install) than to let the HPSA control the installation of this fussy, sensitive update.
