I am trying to add a printer that I bought used to my HP.com account, but I keep getting a "Please enter a valid serial number" error.  I know I have a valid serial number because it is on the printer and if I use the same number to check warranty/service status then HP.com brings up the correct info.  What is the problem?

Hi @ThisIknow,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If you're encountering a "Please enter a valid serial number" error when trying to add your used printer to your HP.com account, there could be a few reasons for this issue. Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot and resolve the problem.

  • Check for Typos: Make sure you are entering the serial number correctly. Serial numbers are often case-sensitive and should be entered exactly as they appear on the printer.
  • Use the Correct Format: Ensure that you are entering the serial number in the correct format. Some serial numbers include letters and are a combination of numbers and letters. Check for any specific formatting requirements mentioned on the HP website.
  • Clear Browser Cache: Sometimes, browser cache and cookies can cause issues with website functionality. Clear your browser's cache and cookies, then try entering the serial number again.
  • Try a Different Browser: If the issue persists, try using a different web browser to see if the problem is browser-specific.
  • Update Browser: Ensure that your browser is up to date. An outdated browser may not support certain features on the website.
  • Check Serial Number Validity: Confirm that the serial number you have corresponds to the correct product. Some products may have multiple serial numbers, and it's essential to use the one associated with the printer.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Hi Alden4,

Thanks for your help.  I tried all of these suggestions and I still get the same problem.  I am confident that I have the right serial number because when I enter it into this page: https://support.hp.com/us-en/contact/select-product

Please help me learn whey I can't register this printer!! I bought it used and it appears to be able to work fine but I can't get it printing if I can't register it!  I need a printer that works!

Can I PM you the serial number so you can determine why HP won't let me register it?

Thanks,
Paul

Hello, I had a similar issue:

  • Tried the "let HP detect your product" tool in Chrome on a Win11 machine and it didn't work, so then...
  • YES - I cleared the cache, closed the tab, closed the browser, then reopened the browser and tried it all again = FAIL
  • YES - I tried another two browsers and the "let HP detect your product" tool, first Chrome, then Edge Chromium, then Firefox = FAIL
  • YES - I tried to manually enter the product information, again, on all three browsers, and again, deleting cookies and history multiple times.
  • YES - I selected "Contact Us" on HP.COM while I was logged in, it asks me to select a product that isn't listed, so I clicked on the generic printer button on "contact us" page and miraculously the printer SN and model pops up.
  • YES - the printer is connected to a current version of HP Smart Win11 desktop app.

So, what is the disconnect HP??? And please don't "troubleshoot" me an answer, just fix the problem with your code please.

25 minutes on chat, typing all this below again and here's the result = FAIL, I get to call another number:

Please know that as much as I wanted to assist you in resolving this issue, here in HP Chat Technical Support that you have contacted doesn’t have the necessary tools to address this issue. However, we have our representatives from the HP Cloud department which may be able to assist you with this account issue HP Cloud Hotline: phone number not allowed to display per the community 'moderator bot'

So, it appears that original HP community expert advice should be updated with the "cloud helpline".
