Hi @mjreynozo,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
If you're having trouble updating the BIOS on your HP 15 laptop from a USB key, you can follow these steps to troubleshoot and resolve the issue.
- Check BIOS Update Compatibility: Ensure that the BIOS update you downloaded from HP's official website is compatible with your specific HP 15 laptop model. Download the correct BIOS update file if necessary.
- Format the USB Drive: Make sure your USB drive is properly formatted. It should be formatted to FAT32 for BIOS updates. If it's not, you can format it using your computer's built-in formatting tools or a third-party tool like Rufus.
- Use a USB 2.0 Port: Some older laptops may have issues with BIOS updates when using USB 3.0 or later ports. Try using a USB 2.0 port if available, as they are often more compatible with BIOS flashing.
- Check USB Drive Capacity: Ensure that your USB drive has enough space for the BIOS update file. Sometimes, a small USB drive might not have sufficient space for the update file.
- Rename the BIOS Update File: Sometimes, renaming the BIOS update file to a specific name can help with recognition. Check HP's documentation or website for any specific naming requirements for the BIOS file.
- Use HP's BIOS Update Utility: HP often provides a BIOS update utility that simplifies the process. Download and run the HP BIOS Update Utility, and it should guide you through the update process. This utility is typically available on HP's support website.
- Disable Secure Boot: In some cases, you may need to temporarily disable Secure Boot in the BIOS settings to allow the BIOS update to proceed. Be sure to re-enable it after the update is completed.
- Check for BIOS Password: If your BIOS is password-protected, you will need to enter the BIOS password to perform the update. Make sure you know the BIOS password if it's set.
- Use the Correct BIOS Key: When booting up your laptop, ensure that you press the correct key to access the boot menu or BIOS settings. Typically, it's F2, F10, ESC, or another key. Check your laptop's documentation for the specific key for your model.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
