Trying to connect an external monitor to brand new laptop. I know the monitor and cables are good because they work fine on my Chromebook. I've tried a variety of combinations and sequencing of attaching the monitor cable, rebooting the laptop, cycling power on monitor and laptop with no luck. Also, 'auto detect' in Windows settings doesn't seem to recognize anything. Starting to think it may be a driver problem, but don't know where to turn next. Any suggestions?

Problem solved - it turns out HP's USB-C port does not support monitors. Plan to attach my external monitor via the HDMI port.
