HP Pavilion g7-1330dx Notebook PC
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I had to do a Reset on my HP Pavilion G7 series running Windows 10 Home due to suspected virus issue.  The Reset was done without saving any files or programs not originally installed on the machine.  The Reset went fine and all updates were done for Windows 10.  I did an Off-Line and Full Windows Defender scan after the Reset and no evidence of a virus was detected.  I downloaded the HP Support Assistant file sp151723 and  installed on my machine.  When I tried to run it, nothing happened.  When I looked in the Apps in Windows, the icon was there, but nothing happens when I clicked on it.  I  Uninstalled using the Windows>Settings>Apps> uninstall and reinstalling the program (no mention of keeping preferences). I reinstalled the program and still, no response from the program. It would not load up.  I suspect some code was left in the registry when I did the Reset that is causing a conflict with installing and running the sp151723.  Is there a HP removal tool that would remove all code from a previous HP support Assistant install?

Hi @TomPTC,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like you've already tried several steps to resolve the issue with HP Support Assistant. Here are some additional steps you can take to ensure a clean installation.

Run the HP Support Assistant Uninstaller Tool

HP provides a tool specifically for cleaning up the remnants of HP Support Assistant. You can download and run the HP Support Assistant Uninstaller tool from the HP website.

  1. Download the HP Support Assistant Uninstaller.
  2. Run the downloaded executable file.
  3. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the uninstallation process.
  4. Restart your computer after the uninstallation.

Clear the Registry

Manually cleaning the registry can be risky, so it’s crucial to back up the registry before making any changes. You can use a registry cleaner tool if you are uncomfortable doing it manually.

Backup the Registry:

  • Press Win + R, type regedit, and press Enter.
  • In the Registry Editor, click File > Export.
  • Choose a location to save the backup file and give it a name.
  • Ensure "All" is selected under Export range, then click Save.

Remove HP Support Assistant Entries:

  • In the Registry Editor, press Ctrl + F to open the search box.
  • Type HP Support Assistant and press Enter.
  • Delete any found entries related to HP Support Assistant.
  • Press F3 to find the next entry and repeat until all entries are removed.

Reinstall HP Support Assistant

After cleaning up, download and reinstall HP Support Assistant:

  1. Download the latest version of HP Support Assistant from the HP website.
  2. Run the installer and follow the on-screen instructions.
  3. Restart your computer if prompted.

Check for Windows Updates and Compatibility

Ensure your system is fully updated:

  1. Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
  2. Click Check for updates and install any available updates.
  3. Restart your computer after installing updates.

Run HP Support Assistant as Administrator

Sometimes running the program with elevated privileges can help:

  1. Right-click the HP Support Assistant icon.
  2. Select Run as administrator.

If the issue persists, try the following:

Check Event Viewer for Errors:

  • Press Win + X and select Event Viewer.
  • Look for any errors or warnings related to HP Support Assistant under Windows Logs > Application and System.

Create a New User Account:

  • Sometimes, user profile corruption can cause issues.
  • Create a new local user account and try running HP Support Assistant from there.

Compatibility Mode:

  • Right-click the HP Support Assistant icon and select Properties.
  • Go to the Compatibility tab.
  • Check Run this program in compatibility mode for: and select Windows 8.
  • Click Apply and OK.

These steps should help resolve the issue with HP Support Assistant not running on your HP Pavilion G7.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
