Hi @Demondruidess,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
To address the issue of not being able to find or change the "recommendation setting" while attempting to download a program on your HP laptop with Windows 11, follow these steps:
1. Verify User Account Control (UAC) Settings
User Account Control settings can affect the ability to install software. Ensure it's set appropriately.
- Open Control Panel: Press Windows + S, type Control Panel, and hit Enter.
- Navigate to User Accounts: Click on User Accounts.
- Change UAC Settings: Click on Change User Account Control settings.
- Adjust the slider: Set it to Default or Notify me only when apps try to make changes to my computer (do not dim my desktop).
- Click OK: Apply the settings and restart your computer.
2. Enable the App Installation Setting
Windows 11 has a setting that controls where you can install apps from.
- Open Settings: Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Apps: Go to Apps.
- Apps & Features: Click on Apps & features.
- Choose where to get apps: Find the setting for Choose where to get apps and select Anywhere or Warn me before installing apps from outside the Store.
3. Check for Missing Settings
If certain settings are missing, it might be due to group policies or registry settings.
Group Policy Editor (For Windows 11 Pro and above)
- Open Group Policy Editor: Press Windows + R, type gpedit.msc, and press Enter.
- Navigate to Policies:
- Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Installer
- Check Policies: Ensure no policies are preventing installations from outside sources.
Registry Editor (Caution: Editing the registry can cause system issues if done incorrectly)
- Open Registry Editor: Press Windows + R, type regedit, and press Enter.
- Navigate to the Key: Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System.
- Modify Value:
- Look for the EnableLUA key. Ensure it’s set to 1 (default value).
4. Troubleshoot with Windows Troubleshooter
- Open Troubleshoot Settings: Press Windows + S, type Troubleshoot, and press Enter.
- Additional Troubleshooters: Click on Additional troubleshooters.
- Program Install and Uninstall Troubleshooter: Run the troubleshooter to fix issues that prevent program installation.
5. Update Windows
Ensure your Windows is up to date as updates can resolve many issues.
- Open Settings: Press Windows + I.
- Windows Update: Go to Windows Update and click Check for updates.
6. Disable S Mode (if applicable)
Some HP laptops come with Windows 11 in S Mode, which restricts installations to apps from the Microsoft Store.
- Open Settings: Press Windows + I.
- System: Go to System.
- Activation: Click on Activation.
- Switch out of S Mode: Follow the prompts to switch out of S Mode.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
