Hi, My daughter has a Chromebook about 18 months old, this morning when she turned it on their were lots of vertical stripes down the screen, what looks like an open white page on half the screen and a black spot. Everywhere I look it mentions powerwashing the machine, but the problem I have is I cannot login as that part of the screen is too messed up and I cant click on it. I tried bypassing the login page by doing, ctrl, alt, shift and R and I can just about see the box that says 'powerwash' on it and I click on it but then something else comes up just out of reach!! Grrr!! its very frustrating. Does anybody have any ideas what I could try, maybe restarting it somehow without needing to click on the screen ? Thanks very much

Had you considered using the HDMI port to connect a external display (even an HDTV) to the Chromebook? By doing that you will be able to isolate the issue to the video output solution or the Chromebook's LCD display.
You will also be able to powerwash the Chromebook if you are able to see a normal browser.
Another option is to create a recovery flashdrive and use it. That is one of the options described on the following Google Chrome web docuument.

Take a look at the following HP support web document on display issues to see if the display looks like one of the images.

Thanks for your help, we tried the HDMI option, and from that we realised the fault was with the screen, looks like it has been damaged although unsure how. We ordered a new screen from Ebay, its all now working fine, thanks again for your help.

That is good to hear. I have a Chromebook of my own and my stepdaughter and I love it.
