Hi @Kknauerr,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
If your HP Chromebook is not starting and shows only a blank screen even after trying to restart it, and the My Book external drive is plugged in, here are some troubleshooting steps you can take.
Disconnect My Book
- Power off the Chromebook completely by holding the power button for about 10 seconds.
- Unplug the My Book external drive.
- Try to power on the Chromebook without the external drive connected.
- If it powers on, the external drive might be causing a conflict during the boot process.
Perform a Hard Reset
- Press and hold the Refresh key (a circular arrow) and the Power button simultaneously.
- Release both keys when the Chromebook restarts.
- This clears any temporary issues with the system.
Check for a Hardware Problem
- Remove all peripherals (e.g., external drives, USB devices).
- Connect the Chromebook to its charger and ensure the charger is working.
- Check if any indicator lights on the Chromebook (like the power light) turn on.
- If there are no lights, the battery or power adapter may have an issue.
Attempt Recovery Mode
If the Chromebook still won’t boot:
- Press and hold Esc + Refresh, then press the Power button.
- Release all keys when you see the Recovery screen or an error message.
- If you reach this screen, the Chromebook's operating system may need to be reinstalled using a recovery image.
Test My Book on Another Device
- Plug the My Book external drive into a different computer to ensure it's functioning correctly.
- If the My Book causes issues on another device, it may have a hardware or file system problem.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
