HP Pavilion 15.6 inch Gaming Laptop PC 15-ec2000 IDS Base Model
Microsoft Windows 11

I have historically not had any issues with the RAM in my PC.  However, my computer randomly stopped recognizing my second RAM card reducing my RAM from 2x8 to 1x8.  My hardware seems to be fine as CPU-Z can still recognize the RAM, though my BIOS does not as evidenced by the pre-start up system information reading only 8 GB of RAM.  I still have the factory installed RAM in the computer.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi @Blobfish17,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I understand how concerning it is when your HP Pavilion Gaming Laptop suddenly stops recognizing one of its RAM modules, especially when everything was working fine before.

Let’s walk through this carefully.

Steps to Troubleshoot

1. Power Cycle and Reseat RAM

  • Turn off your laptop completely
  • Unplug the charger and remove the battery (if removable)
  • Open the back panel carefully
  • Remove both RAM sticks, then reinsert them firmly
  • Make sure they’re seated evenly and securely in their slots

2. Swap RAM Slots

  • Try switching the positions of the RAM sticks
  • This helps identify if one slot is faulty

3. Test Each RAM Stick Individually

  • Insert one stick at a time and boot the laptop
  • Check if each stick is recognized individually
  • If both work alone but not together, it could be a slot issue or a BIOS limitation

4. Update BIOS

  • Visit the Official HP® Support
  • Download and install the latest BIOS update
  • BIOS updates often fix memory recognition issues

5. Check BIOS Settings

  • Enter BIOS (usually by pressing Esc or F10 during startup)
  • Look for memory settings to ensure Dual Channel Mode is enabled (if available)
  • Save and exit

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!

I’ve already done the RAM swapping thing.  My left slot detects both cards and my right slot detects neither.  I already have the F.30 BIOS.  I can’t find the BIOS setting to make sure I am running dual channel RAM.

Also, based on CPU-Z it looks like my RAM timing is fine.
