Every so often, my HP Spectre will start trying to open an HP web site and I'm trying to figure out why.

I use multiple browsers, so I I use a utility called "BrowserSelector" that lets me choose which browser in which any given link should be opened.  It intercepts the attempt to open the browser window and I click which browser I want to use for that session.

Every so often (I haven't figured out the trigger yet), my computer will suddenly try to open this URL:

It wants to open it so badly that it will send nearly 30 requests within about ten seconds. Every request is to the same URL.

I allowed one of the requests to go through, and it took me to this page:

That doesn't really give me any clues why HP so desperately wants me to see this page. I even clicked on the little bell on the right with the badge, where I saw this:

OrigVirtualMike_1-1760488328441.png

That was last updated in September.

When I opened the HP Support Assistant to see if it had anything important for me, I then got additional requests to open web pages, but those also went to the same URL. Again, however, the web page did not get me any useful information or instructions on what exactly the computer wants me to.

Why does the computer keep trying to make me to go HP's web site? Is this just for marketing and can be ignored? Or is there something that I really should do to protect my computer? ...thanks!

Hi @OrigVirtualMike,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

Thank you for sharing the screenshots; they’re very helpful. Here’s what’s happening:

Why Your HP Spectre Keeps Trying to Open HP’s Website

The repeated attempts to open the URL shown in your image (hpsa-redirectors.hpcloud.com/...) are triggered by HP Support Assistant (HPSA). This tool periodically checks for:

  • Critical security bulletins (as shown in your last screenshot).
  • Driver updates and warranty alerts.
  • Promotions or product-specific notices.

When HPSA detects something it considers important, it tries to redirect you to the HP product support page for your device. The multiple requests you observed (30 in 10 seconds) usually occur when:

  • HPSA is stuck in a loop due to a failed redirect.
  • There’s a pending alert or bulletin that hasn’t been acknowledged.
  • The app is trying to sync with HP’s servers after being opened or updated.

What You Should Do

  1. Open HP Support Assistant manually:
    • Check the Updates and Messages tabs.
    • Install any recommended updates, especially BIOS and security patches.

  2. Clear Pending Notifications:
    • In HPSA, mark all bulletins as read.
    • This often stops the repeated redirect attempts.

  3. Update HP Support Assistant:
  4. Disable Automatic Notifications (Optional):
    • In HPSA settings, turn off Pop-up notifications or Marketing messages.
    • Keep Critical updates enabled for safety.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!

Thank you , Vikram! I've confirmed I'm using the latest version of HPSA. I toggled the settings as you suggested and ensured there are no unread messages.

Interestingly, just opening HPSA caused several more attempts to open the same browser window. What I don't understand is that the browser isn't directing or even suggesting that I take any specific action.  It feels like HPSA just wants me to go take a look at a page that I've seen so many times before! ...cheers!
