Hi @MichaelP57

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

Thanks for sharing that. The error code 0x800f0831 typically points to a missing update dependency or a system file issue that’s blocking the installation.

Freezing during use may also be linked to incomplete updates or corrupted components.

Here’s a structured approach to help resolve both problems:

Step 1: Run Windows Update Troubleshooter

  1. In Windows, search for "Troubleshoot settings" and open it.
  2. Select "Additional troubleshooters."
  3. Choose "Windows Update" and then click on "Run the troubleshooter."
  4. Follow the on-screen steps to resolve any detected issues.

Step 2: Clear Windows Update Cache

  1. Open "Command Prompt" as an administrator.
  2. Type the following commands and press Enter after each:
    • net stop wuauserv
    • net stop cryptSvc
    • net stop bits
    • net stop msiserver
  3. Navigate to C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution and delete all contents in the folder.
  4. Return to the Command Prompt and type:
    • net start wuauserv
    • net start cryptSvc
    • net start bits
    • net start msiserver

Step 3: Use Windows Update Assistant

  1. Visit the official Windows Update page and download the Windows Update Assistant.
  2. Run the tool and follow the on-screen instructions to upgrade or repair your current Windows installation.

Step 4: Perform a Hard Reset

  1. Turn off the computer.
  2. Disconnect the AC adapter, external devices, and perform a hard reset by holding the power button for about 15 seconds.
  3. Reconnect the AC adapter and power it on.

Step 5: Check and Clean Air Vents

Ensure that the air vents are clean to prevent overheating, which could be causing the system freezes. Use compressed air to clear any dust or debris.

Step 6: Update Drivers with HP Support Assistant

  1. In Windows, search for and open HP Support Assistant.
  2. Select your laptop in My Dashboard.
  3. Click on Updates, download, and install any available driver updates.

Step 7: Run Hardware Diagnostics

Run extensive hardware diagnostics using the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics Windows tool to check for any underlying hardware issues.

Let me know how far you get with these steps.

You're clearly being proactive—let’s get your system running smoothly again.
