I have an old go laptop. Purchased early 2000s. Will it be safe to throw it away with my information still in it?

Remove the hard drive, hit it a few times with a hammer (wear protective eye covering to be safe), and then you throw the drive in the trash, and you can bring the PC to a local PC repair shop that will take broken PC's for recycling.  Most of them usually will.

Then your PC will not have any data on it that could be accessed by an unauthorized person.
