I am trying to connect  a Dell 1909w monitor to my  HP LAPTOP Mod 15-fd1085cl 9T85UA. I have connected them with a DVI to HDMI adapter. I can see both screens. I am using the extended display mode and that seems to work. I  can use Microsoft Office pretty well, but beyond that I am not real computer savvy. How do I set the system so I can move the mouse between the 2 Displays? Right now, I am struggling with that.   Moe

Hi @DustyDad

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for posting your query! We're here to help you get back up and running.

When using an extended display setup, it's essential to ensure that your monitor arrangement is properly configured in your system settings. Here are the steps to adjust the display settings on your HP Laptop (Model 15-fd1085cl 9T85UA) so that you can smoothly move your mouse between the two screens:

Step-by-Step Guide for Windows 10/11:

Right-click on the Desktop:

  • Right-click on an empty area of your desktop.
  • Select Display settings from the context menu.

Rearrange Displays:

  • In the Display settings window, you should see your two monitors represented as rectangles with numbers (1 and 2).
  • Drag and rearrange the rectangles to match the physical arrangement of your monitors. For example, ensure that the Dell 1909w (represented by one of the rectangles) is positioned correctly relative to your laptop’s screen. This allows your cursor to move seamlessly between the monitors.
  • If your primary display (laptop) is on the left and the secondary monitor (Dell 1909w) is on the right, place Monitor 1 on the left of Monitor 2.

Identify Displays:

  • Click the Identify button. Numbers will appear on each screen, allowing you to verify which monitor is which. Adjust if necessary.

Apply and Save:

  • After arranging the displays, click the Apply button.
  • Confirm the changes by selecting Keep changes.

Adjust Mouse Movement:

  • Move your mouse across the screens to ensure that it seamlessly transitions from one monitor to the other. If it doesn’t, double-check the arrangement step to ensure the displays align correctly.

Additional Tips:

  • Make sure both monitors are powered on and connected correctly.
  • If you experience any issues with the display detection, try unplugging and reconnecting the DVI to HDMI adapter.
  • Ensure your graphics drivers are up to date. You can check this through the Device Manager by right-clicking on Start, selecting Device Manager, and updating the drivers under Display adapters.

By following these steps, you should be able to move the mouse smoothly between your HP laptop screen and your Dell 1909w monitor.
