Try this:

1. Hold down the ALT key

2. Type 1 8 4

3. Release the ALT key

Do you see:   ©

1. Hold down the ALT key

2. Type 1 6 9

3. Release the ALT key

Do you see:  ®

NOTE: In step #2 above, do NOT type any blanks between the digits.
