Dear HP Support Team,

I am experiencing severe stability issues with my HP EliteBook 840 G8. Whenever I perform a clean installation of any Windows version, the system works perfectly fine offline. However, the moment I connect to the internet and Windows Update begins downloading and installing drivers automatically, the system experiences fatal crashes and throws a Blue Screen of Death (BSOD), specifically showing errors such as ATTEMPTED_WRITE_TO_READONLY_MEMORY.

Additionally, the Wi-Fi adapter periodically drops the connection entirely, and the USB ports stop responding, which completely freezes the laptop and forces me to perform a hard reset.

It strongly appears to be a conflict with the default/generic drivers that Windows Update is forcing onto the system.

Could you please advise on how to resolve this? Specifically, I would like to know:

  1. Which official HP-approved drivers (chipset, network, etc.) should I install offline to prevent this conflict?

  2. How can I configure the system to remain stable and receive necessary security updates without Windows Update automatically breaking the Wi-Fi, USB, and overall system functionality?

Thank you for your time and assistance.

Hi:

This is a peer-to-peer forum, not HP customer support.

We do not work for or represent HP.

If your notebook came with Windows from HP, I recommend that you use the HP cloud recovery client utility to make a bootable USB recovery drive that gives you the option to automatically install the HP drivers and software.

Here is an info link for how to use the software.  Pay particular attention for how to install the drivers.

You can download the recovery software tool from your notebook's support page at the link below:

Another option you have is to reinstall Windows the way you are doing now, not connect to the internet and download and install the official HP drivers from your notebook's support page:

You can set up W11 by setting up a local account and not connect to the internet:

See this link:

Download the drivers and copy them to a USB flash drive and install them that way.

Then connect to the internet afterward.
