On my HP Pavilion (Windows 10) laptop, it seems ok to cut and paste between folders within the laptop. But say if i have a Word file on a USB named "ABC", and I cut and paste it into my Desktop, where there is another Word file named "ABC", it asks me if I want to replace, skip or compare. If I select "Replace the file in the destination", it deletes my ABC file on Desktop but doesn't replace it with the ABC file on my USB, i.e., I would lose it altogether.
Is there a setting I need to fix?
Note: If there is no file in the destination folder with the same name, then cut and paste works fine. Only problem if same name file exists.

Hello, @MTSHUM
This is not the normal design on the HP Pavilion notebook. Upon reading the issue, I personally checked this on a Pavilion series and it worked well.
It could be an issue with your user profile. Try to create a new administrator account and check.
Follow the steps here to create a new administrator account: Create a local user or administrator account in Windows - Microsoft Support
Now, login to this account and try the steps to cut and paste.
Let me know how that goes!
Thank you 🙂

Hello, @MTSHUM – Greetings!
Allow me to welcome to HP Support Forums! It is a great platform to get help from the community, get suggestions and find what has worked for others!
I understand that you are having trouble while using the “CUT” & “PASTE” option on your HP Pavilion. This is a basic operation and I do not think this has anything to do with any setting on your PC.
I would suggest you further isolate the issue by performing the suggested actions:
- Is the issue specific to while copying a file from the USB disk? Try to cut & paste from a different folder to another folder and check.
- Is the issue specific to a particular document type? E.g. Word file, PDF, Excel etc.
- Also, if the issue is only while using the USB with a specific file, then try a different USB and different file and check.
In the mean time, try to use the “Copy” & “Paste” option to save the files from accidentally getting deleted.
Please let me know if this resolves the issue, or if you require further assistance!
Good luck 🙂

Hello DVortex,
Thank you for your reply.
Having tried out many different ways, I can confirm that this only happens when copying from ANY USB to my laptop for ANY type of file.
Copy and paste works fine, but I am trying to find out if this is the design/fault on all HP Pavilion laptops, or is it just mine that has this problem? Cut and paste should not be like this, especially as it gives me the replace option.
Would you be able to give any more clarification? Many thanks in advance:-)

Hello DVortex,
I will try that, but I just want to clarify on two things first if possible.
1. Would I lose all of my data in my current login if I create an administrator account?
2. If the administrator works, does that mean my current account will work too? Or would I need to do anything else?
I've posted two other questions on my HP forums page, so it'd be great if you can have a look too in your spare time? Thanks:-)

Hello, @MTSHUM
To answer your questions;
1) No, you will not loose any data if you create another user account.
2) If the administrator account works, then there is some possible permission issue with your current account. You can try changing your current account type or simply copy all your files to the new account.
Let me know how that goes!
Cheers 🙂

Hi DVortex,
Many thanks for your continued patience. As of now, this is not a very serious problem, so I will leave it for now. Should this pose to be trouble again in future, I will definitely try out your method first and will hopefully see that it works perfectly:-)
