What DMI tool version should I use for HP 15-da0046nk
and how to create the bootable USB for it?

Hi @Kai0769

Welcome to the HP support community.

Step-by-Step Guide to Download and Create Bootable USB for DMI Tool:

1. Download the Correct DMI Tool Version

HP provides a utility called HP DMI/BIOS Configuration Tool or sometimes just the HP SoftPaq tool. The exact tool and version depend on your HP model and the specific BIOS version installed.

Visit the HP Support Website:

  • Go to HP Support.
  • Enter HP Notebook - 15-da0046nk into the search bar and go to the Drivers & Downloads section.

Download the Correct DMI Tool:

  • Navigate to the BIOS or Utilities section to find the DMI Tool (it might be listed as part of the BIOS/firmware or a utility tool).
  • Download the latest version of the tool compatible with your laptop’s BIOS version.

Note: If you can't find a specific "DMI Tool," it’s likely that HP provides this functionality through HP SoftPaq Download Manager or HP BIOS Configuration Utility (for BIOS updates).

2. Create a Bootable USB Drive

Once you've downloaded the DMI tool, you'll need to create a bootable USB to run the tool outside the operating system (usually in DOS or BIOS setup mode). Here’s how to do that:

Using Rufus to Create a Bootable USB

Download Rufus:

  • Go to the official Rufus website and download the latest version.

Prepare the USB Drive:

  • Insert a USB flash drive (at least 4GB in size) into your computer.
  • Open Rufus and select the USB drive under Device.

Select the Bootable Image:

  • If the DMI tool comes as a DOS-based .iso image, select the ISO image option in Rufus.
  • Click on Select and choose the .iso file (the DMI tool or BIOS update utility file you downloaded).

Set the Partition Scheme:

  • Choose MBR if your laptop uses BIOS, or GPT for UEFI (modern systems).
  • Leave the file system as FAT32.

Create the Bootable USB:

  • Click on Start to begin creating the bootable USB drive.
  • After it completes, you will have a bootable USB drive ready with the DMI tool.

3. Boot from USB and Run the DMI Tool

  1. Insert the Bootable USB into the HP notebook.
  2. Restart the Laptop and press Esc or F9 during startup to enter the Boot Menu.
  3. Select the USB Drive as the boot device.
  4. Once it boots into the DOS environment or the DMI tool interface, follow the on-screen instructions to run the DMI tool.

Warning: The DMI tool allows you to modify critical system data. Make sure you follow any instructions carefully and back up important data before making any changes.

I hope this helps! Keep me posted.

I did not find it in my pc support page,
The problem is my PC's serial, product number and model name changed after a bios update and my ssd is not recognized anymore, I tried to reinstall the previous BIOS listed in my pc model support page (F.48 Rev.A, May 7, 2024), it says this BIOS is not compatible with my PC, I don't get it.
By the way the BIOS I updated to was recommended by Windows in the optional updates (Insyde F.49, 8/20/2024)
Is it an incorrect update or what? cause it is not listed in my pc model support page
Anyway is there a way to fix it ? I tried many dmi versions from different places, the PC doesn't want to boot from the usb every time I try

Hi @Kai0769

It seems like you're encountering a few issues after a BIOS update, including:

  1. Changed serial number, product number, and model name.
  2. SSD not recognized.
  3. Incompatible BIOS version after attempting to downgrade.

Here’s a shorter troubleshooting guide to address this:

1. Check the Correct BIOS Version

  • If the F.49 BIOS was recommended by Windows Update, it might be a newer version not officially listed on your support page, but it could still be intended for your system.
  • Since it changed your PC's serial/product number, the BIOS might have mismatched with your system. F.48 Rev.A might be a safer bet, but if the PC doesn't allow you to install it, the BIOS might have been corrupted during the update process.

2. Reset the BIOS

  • Clear CMOS by removing the motherboard's CMOS battery for a few minutes, or use the CMOS jumper on the motherboard (refer to your manual).
  • This should reset the BIOS settings to default and potentially restore the original serial/product number.

3. Check BIOS Compatibility

  • When trying to install F.48 BIOS, if it says “not compatible,” ensure you are using the correct version for your model.
  • Verify model and serial: Sometimes, the system board revision changes after a BIOS update, so make sure the BIOS you’re trying to install is for the exact board revision you have.

4. Boot from USB:

  • Create a bootable USB with a working Windows image or BIOS recovery tool. If the system doesn't boot from USB, try these:
    • Ensure the USB is formatted as FAT32.
    • Disable Secure Boot and enable Legacy Boot in BIOS settings (if accessible).
    • Make sure the boot order is set to USB in BIOS.

I hope this helps! Keep me posted.
