HP Spectre x360 Laptop - 15-eb0501na
Microsoft Windows 11

I have a HP Spectre X360 15 eb-0501na and when connecting to a Kensington SD5780T docking station it connects and disconnects every few seconds, also making a noise. There is a message showing that there`s no power enough to charge the laptop, even that the dock is capable of charging up to 96W via USB C and the Spectre is supposed to charge up to 100W via USB C. I suspect HP is not allowing third party docks or charges to work on HP products. Any ideas? Thank you!

The specs of your machine is

            https://support.hp.com/au-en/document/c06636215

It uses 135W charger, you need a charger with wattage rating 135W or more. Your Kensington SD5780T docking station gives only 96W therefore it is not have enough power to charge your machine. It may charge your machine when NOT in use.

Hope this makes sense.

Regards.

Hi Banhien, thanks for your reply. But other laptops allow you to charge even if they are over 100w of power. The only difference is that they won't use the laptops full power, but it works. I believe this is HP not allowing third party devices to work with their products, forcing the consumer to buy only HP. If it works on other brands should work with HP.

The Spectre is rated at 100W USB-C charging, it means it should work with a USB-C charger up to 100W otherwise it wouldn't be rated for that. As far as I could see discussions on HP forums, HP is the one to blame. Apparently they only allow HP chargers or docking stations to cahrge HP laptops, blocking other brands from doing it. Such a shame for having a tide system. I just wanted to make sure this was the problem. I believe HP will never confirm this publically, unfortunately.

Just an update, I've tried the docking station charger on Microsoft Surface Book 3, which uses a 127w charger originally and it charges perfectly fine with the 96w docking station charger even under windows and apps updates. Not dropping charger. So, as I suspected, it works and HP is blocking third party charges on purpose, Unfortunately.

Well, I always say: Not all USB-C ports are the same. At this stage I can't find an HP dock which is compatible with HP Spectre machines. I've got a list of HP docks and compatible machines BUT HP removed the list therefore I stopped to show the list.

Regards.
