HP envy 17
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi,

I am running my HP envy 17 with windows10 and had issues with my fingerprint reader. I uninstalled HP SimplePass, but I didn't manage to reinstall a version that works. And if I go on HP website searching for this software for my device (in drivers and softwares), it is not in the list. Could you help me reinstall an HP SimplePass version that works (it used to be a version6). Also, in the HP utility center, I used t have a shortcut for HP SimplePass, which is not there anymore (I only have HP recovery manager; Hp support assistant; HP coolsense).

Thanks for your help

Hi,

Can I ask which method you used to uninstall the HP SimplePass Driver.

ACtually I managed to reinstall it by using the HP reccovery manager tool. Now the problem I have with HP SimplePass, is that I can't seem to be able to register a new finger tha I deleted by mistake. I keep having the same message when I click on the + sign on the finger, saying there is a problem trying to encrypt that finger, even though I don't even get to the screen where I am supposed to scan my finger. Any idea?

Apologies for jumping in unannounced!

Depending on the exact model of your notebook (not provided), you may be able to use the following Synaptics / Validity (fingerprint) Driver:

  • Device: USB\VID_138A&PID_0050="Validity Sensors (WBF) (PID=0050)"

sp72143 Validity Sensor V4.5.289.0 WT 64bit

Unfortunately, the latest builds of Windows 10 have finally rendered the AuthenTec HP SimplePass program suite inert.  That means that, in so much that I am aware, you can no longer use any Series 6 (any version 6.x) HP SimplePass with Windows 10.

If your system has enough of the necessary infrastructure in place, usually provided by installing the HP Drivers for Windows 10, then you may be able to use the latest Series 8 HP SimplePass program in place of the defunct Series 6 SimplePass.

Know that Series 8 HP SimplePass is not an "upgrade" of Series 6:

  • The programs are written by two different companies
  • The programs each use separate security encryption - there is no "conversion" program
  • When you switch to Series 8 HP SimplePass, you must manually create a new website / password database (create all new website / passwords setup)

At this writing the latest (most recent) HP SimplePass program download:

sp76923 HP SimplePass V8.01.62A W7-W10 32/64bit

Sorry, just another quick question. SHould I uninstall the old version of SimplePass before downloading the new one? And if so, what is the best way?

Many thanks for your help

@StiveP

If you are Switching from old (Series 6) SimplePass to new (Series 😎 HP SimplePass, first remove the old (Series 6) program.

If you are merely updating an older version of the same Series program, you do not have to remove the existing program.

To remove / unistall SimplePass:

  • Remove existing program from Control Panel > icon view > Programs and Features

OR

  • Windows 10 allows you to uninstall programs from Settings > System > Apps and Features

After the program is uninstalled > Restart the computer and log in
