I have been having this problem only in some games for about 1 month. I had this problem about 3 months ago, but it passed after updating my drivers. Now, although my drivers are up to date, this problem is not solved. I can play some games properly, but in some games it either gives this error and does not enter the game or the game crashes spontaneously after alt+tab. I came across a few solutions on the internet but it didn't work. What can I do to solve this problem?
Thanks.

Hi @ataokaran,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
The DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_REMOVED error usually indicates that your GPU (graphics card) has been unexpectedly disconnected or lost communication with the game, which often leads to crashes or failure to launch. Since updating your drivers didn't resolve the issue this time, here are several steps you can try to fix it.
Check for System and Game Updates
- Ensure that your Windows operating system is fully updated. Sometimes, updates can address compatibility issues.
- Check if there are updates available for the specific games causing issues. These updates may contain bug fixes related to hardware.
Reinstall GPU Drivers
Even though your drivers are up-to-date, they might not be installed correctly or could be corrupted. To fix this:
- Uninstall current drivers using Device Manager.
- Use Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) to fully remove all remnants of the old drivers.
- Reinstall the latest drivers directly from NVIDIA (if you have an NVIDIA GPU) or AMD (if you have an AMD GPU), instead of relying on Windows Update.
Adjust Power Settings
The error can sometimes be related to how power management interacts with your GPU.
- Disable power saving mode for your GPU:
- Go to NVIDIA Control Panel (or AMD Radeon Settings if using an AMD card).
- Set the Power management mode to Prefer maximum performance.
- Ensure your laptop is plugged in while gaming to avoid performance throttling.
Increase GPU Timeout Detection
In some cases, this error is caused by the GPU taking longer than expected to complete a task. You can adjust the Timeout Detection and Recovery (TDR) settings:
- Press Win + R, type regedit, and hit Enter to open the Registry Editor.
- Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\GraphicsDrivers.
- Right-click on the empty space in the right pane and select New > DWORD (32-bit) Value.
- Name it TdrDelay.
- Double-click the new TdrDelay value and set its Value data to 8.
- Close the Registry Editor and restart your PC.
Check for Overheating
Ensure your laptop's cooling system is functioning well. Overheating can cause the GPU to be removed from the system due to thermal protection:
- Clean your laptop’s fans and ensure good airflow.
- Use software like MSI Afterburner or HWMonitor to monitor GPU temperature while gaming.

Check Game-Specific Settings
- Sometimes, specific games have settings that cause conflicts with certain GPUs.
- Lower the graphics settings (especially those related to GPU-heavy features like ray tracing) or try running the game in Windowed mode instead of Fullscreen to avoid crashing after alt+tab.
Test with Different Graphics Settings
If your laptop has an integrated GPU in addition to the dedicated GPU, try switching between them:
- Open NVIDIA Control Panel or AMD Settings.
- Set the game to run on the dedicated GPU instead of the integrated one, or vice versa.
System Restore or Clean OS Installation
If none of the above steps work and the issue started recently, consider performing a System Restore to a point before the problem began. If that doesn't help, a clean reinstall of Windows might be necessary to rule out any software corruption.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
