@blassedyoung, Welcome to the HP Support Community!
Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding eGPU!
We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.
Your HP Pavilion 17-e040us Notebook PC does not officially support external GPUs (eGPU). However, you may explore using an mPCIe to eGPU adapter (such as the EXP GDC Beast) to connect an external GPU. Please note a few important considerations:
- BIOS Whitelisting – Some HP laptops have a whitelist in the BIOS that restricts certain hardware from being recognized. If your system has this limitation, the mPCIe adapter may not work.
- mPCIe Slot Usage – The mPCIe slot is typically occupied by the Wi-Fi card. To use an eGPU, you may need to remove the Wi-Fi card, meaning you’ll need an alternative for internet connectivity (such as a USB Wi-Fi adapter).
- No Thunderbolt Support – Since your laptop does not have a Thunderbolt port, performance may be limited when using an mPCIe connection compared to official eGPU-supported systems.
- Compatibility & Performance Uncertainty – This setup is not officially tested or supported by HP, so results may vary. Some users have had success, but others encounter driver, stability, or performance issues.
If you choose to proceed, we recommend researching user experiences with similar setups and ensuring you have a backup plan in case the configuration does not work as expected. Let us know if you have any other questions!
Take care, and have an amazing day!
