- EliteBook 8440w -- Loud fan, constantly running

I recently purchased an EliteBook 8440w, pre-configured with an i7 processor. Model FN093UT#ABA to be exact.
Everything about this notebook is absolutely wonderful, save for the annoying sound of the exhaust fan running at all times, even during idle without any programs open and running. I've read a number of reviews and visited quite a few forums in which users described this notebook as "silent" when idling and even undre light load most users say they can barely hear their exhaust fan.
For some reason, mine spins rather loudly at all times. Is this something other users have experienced? Perhaps I'm missing a driver to regulate thermal temperatures?
How can I quiet this beast down?

Hi,
I think that you can solve it by changing BIOS setting for the fan. There is setting for it. I do not remember it exactly but it is something like "System fan constantly ON". You have to change it to "disabled". The fan will then run only if temperature is too high.
It works for me but fan starts running on full speed which is quite disturbing. I wonder if there is some option to change the speed of the fan when it starts running.

Hi:
Please see Chapter 5, page 101 of your notebook's maintenance & service manual. There is a BIOS setting to disable the fan always on when on A/C power setting. Here is the link to the manuals page. I can't send you to the direct link that has the service manual for some reason.
If your fan is always running on battery power, you should clean the vents with canned air because it should not be running constantly on battery power. You either have dust in the fan and heatsink vents or you have some running processes using a lot of processor or graphics energy, which creates heat.

I had sam problem, tried all previuos recomendation, still problem not resolved. What fixed the problem was a combinaton of three actions:
1. edit power option plan. advanced setting to:
..... Intel graphic power plan set to maximu, battary life (both for battary on and power on)
.... set proceessor power mangment, maximum processor state to 90%
You can play with values till you balance the heat of GPU & CPU under 60C, this will cost you essents and speed, but will keep your laptop silent.
Any case I propose to replace paste in GPU/CPU and replace FAN. especialy if laptop was not maintained for more then 18 months.
