HP EliteBook 860 16 inch G10 Notebook PC (6V8W2AV)
Microsoft Windows 11

Hello,

New EliteBook 860 and I have a question about power management via USB-C/Thunderbolt connection - 2 separate problems, probably related.

How do I get the computer to either wake up or power up when I connect the Thunderbolt cable? The connection is to a KVM switch, it's powered.

Second, the computer won't sleep when the Thunderbolt is connected & lid is closed. I issue the sleep command and it wakes up immediately (if it ever really sleeps at all - can't tell).

The other laptop plugged into the KVM switch is a work computer. On that one I can do EVERYTHING - power up, work, shut back down - without ever opening the lid. It powers up when connected, and sleeps (actually, hibernates) as expected. I need to be able to do the same with the EliteBook.

I don't see anything in the Windows power config options that looks relevant, so I suspect a BIOS config setting is the culprit. And I've done lots of web searches - can't believe I'm the only one with this problem.

There are lots of settings in the BIOS that look like they could be related but I can find no documentation on what they do, and not sure I'm up for trial & error to find out, and possibly cause more problems in the process. Things like Thunderbolt mode, USB Type-C Connector System Software Interface, "Power on When AC Detected" (not selected, and grayed out), Power on When Lid is Opened, Runtime Power Management, Power Control, and others. (As an aside, would love to find a user manual for the BIOS to understand what all these settings do).

Would very greatly appreciate some informed feedback on this. Thanks in advance.

Found the solution in another thread:  It's the "Power on when AC detected" setting in Boot Options BIOS settings.  But the default setting is for this option to be grayed out / not selectable.  To enable it you have to DE-select "Power Control" in Power Management Options BIOS settings.

Selecting 'Power on when AC detected' solved BOTH of my power management issues.
