Computer will not wake up after lid is closed for a while.  Screen is black, power button blinks.  Can't even do a hard turn off, have to remove battery.

One fix I found says to enable the keyboard to wake up the computer.  But there is no Power Management tab in the keyboard device manager or in "change settings".  Have also searched computer and it does not exit.  All fixes reference this tab that I do not have.

Welcome to the HP Forums 🙂

I would like to take a moment and thank you for using this forum, it is a great place to find answers.

As I understand, your notebook does not wake up. It's time to wake him up 😛 😉

No worries, as I'll be glad to help you, that said, I'll need a few more details to dissect your concern & provide an accurate solution:

What is the product number of your device? Use this link to find it: http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03754824

(Ensure you do not share any of your personal information such as serial, phone number, email ID, etc...).

When was the last time it worked fine?

Were there any hardware/software changes made?

What is the operating system on PC?

Please follow the below steps:

Step 1: Enabling the Keyboard in Windows

Skip this step if the computer does not enter sleep mode or if the computer wakes unexpectedly.

Follow these steps to enable your keyboard to wake your computer from sleep mode:

  1. In Windows, search for and open the Device Manager.

  2. Click the arrow next to Keyboards and double-click the name of your keyboard.

  3. If the Power Management tab is available, proceed to the next step.

If the Power Management tab is not available, click the Change Settings button if it appears below the Device status box. The same Keyboard Properties window opens with the Power Management tab available.

If you are prompted for an Administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

  1. Click the Power Management tab and make sure that the box next to Allow this device to wake the computer is checked.

  2. Click OK, and then test to make sure that the keyboard can now wake the computer. If the computer still cannot wake from sleep mode, continue using these steps.

  3. For instructions on how to update the BIOS of your computer, see one of the following HP support documents: Updating the BIOS (Notebooks)

For more steps, please Click here.

Keep me posted,

For I shall follow-up on this case to ensure the concern has been addressed,

And your device is up and running again,

Have a great day 🙂

Cheers 🙂

Hi,

Thanks for your response!  The product # is E8A23UA#ABA and I'm running windows 8.  Haven't installed anything or changed hardware / software.  It runs fine, and doesn't happen all the time, mostly if the the lid is closed for a while.  This past time it was closed a couple of hours before happening.  Had to take the battery out since it wouldn't even hard turn off.

In the post I mentioned that I tried the steps you listed and their is no Power Management tab anywhere - not in device manager or change settings or searching the computer, so I cannot set / check it to have it wake by the keyboard.  There are no updates to install either.

Thanks for any help you can give!

Thank you for responding,

It's great to have you back 😉

Did you update the BIOS?

Refer to these steps: Changing power button and lid settings

You can save power by specifying what the computer does when you close the lid or when you press the power button.

  • Depending on the setting you specify, pressing the power button causes the computer to do one of the following: Do nothing, Sleep, Hibernate, or Shut down.

  • Depending on the setting you specify, closing the lid causes the computer to do one of the following: Do nothing, Sleep, Hibernate, or Shut down.

Use the following steps to change power button and lid settings:

  1. At the Start screen, type power options to open the Search charm. Select Power Options in the Search results.

    Figure: Power Options

  2. In the left pane, click Choose what the power buttons do or Choose what closing the lid does.

  3. To change settings for the power button, click the arrow next to When I press the power button, select the setting you wish to use, and then click Save changes.

Thanks for your continued help.  The BIOS is updated and the lid closing is set to sleep not hibernate (which you still shouldn' t have to take the battery out to wake up anyway).  Again, only happens when lid is closed for a longer period of time.

@kathyg4

Thank you for the information,

Since you have updated the BIOS, I would suggest you try creating a new user account and check if the same occurs.

If the issue still continues, perform System Recovery: https://hp.care/2FUqcWv.

Follow steps mentioned below: Recovery when Windows 10 does not start correctly

NOTE: Please back up your personal data before performing System Recovery.

Keep me posted,

Cheers 🙂
