My external Harddisk keeps disconnecting randomly. I searched online for some solution .I updated the bios driver and reduced the disconnecting problem but it's still there. Now it disconnects in a time period of 30-50 mins after connecting and i tried with some other pendrives, still same issue.I disabled usb suspend setting in power options and also unchecked "Allow the computer to turn off the device to save power" in device manager.i have looked for driver updates and all device drivers are upto date. Can anyone suggest me a solution? i have disabled usb boot in bios .Does this have anything to do with this?

Hi @saudu,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like you've already tried several useful steps, such as updating drivers and adjusting power settings. Since the issue persists despite these measures, here are a few additional suggestions to try.
Check USB Port and Cable
- USB Port: Try plugging the external hard drive into a different USB port, preferably a USB 3.0 or higher port if available. A faulty port can cause random disconnections.
- Cable: Try using a different USB cable, as a damaged cable can cause intermittent connectivity.
Test on Another Device
- If possible, test the external hard drive on another computer. This will help you determine whether the issue is with the laptop or the hard drive itself.
Disable USB Selective Suspend (Advanced Power Settings)
- In addition to the steps you’ve already taken, ensure that USB selective suspend is fully disabled. Here’s how:
- Open Control Panel > Power Options.
- Click on Change plan settings for your selected plan.
- Click Change advanced power settings.
- Expand USB settings > USB selective suspend setting and set it to Disabled.
Run Windows Troubleshooter
- Try running the built-in Windows troubleshooter to detect and fix any USB-related issues.
- Open Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot.
- Select Hardware and Devices and follow the on-screen instructions.
Check Device Manager for Errors
- Check the Device Manager for any errors with the USB controllers or the external hard drive.
- Right-click Start > Device Manager.
- Expand the Universal Serial Bus controllers section.
- Right-click each entry under USB controllers and select Uninstall device. Then, restart your laptop, and Windows will reinstall the drivers automatically.
- Also, check for any warning signs (yellow triangles) near the external hard drive entry in Disk Drives.

Check for Overheating
- If your external hard drive is overheating, it might cause random disconnections. Ensure the drive is well-ventilated and not too hot during use.
Try Disabling USB Boot in BIOS (again)
- While disabling USB boot shouldn’t directly affect the drive’s connection, some users have reported that enabling or disabling it in the BIOS has influenced USB device behavior. You could try re-enabling it, rebooting, and checking if that resolves the issue.
Check for Windows Updates
- Ensure your system is up-to-date with the latest Windows updates, as there may be fixes related to USB devices in the latest patches.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
