HP pavilion x2 laptop with detachable keyboard.

I go though the motions to factory reset. But it goes into recovery mode. And says "missing file" and can not perform it.

Hi @13JayRF13 ,

Thank you for choosing HP Community,

The issue you're experiencing with your HP Pavilion x2 laptop, where it cannot perform a factory reset and displays a "missing file" error, might require using alternative recovery methods.

Using HP Recovery Media

  1. Create or Obtain HP Recovery Media:
    • If you have not created recovery media previously, you may need to use the HP Cloud Recovery Download Tool. This tool allows you to create a bootable USB flash drive with the necessary recovery software.
    • To download the HP Cloud Recovery Download Tool, visit HP Support, search for "HP Cloud Recovery," and select the option that suits your device.
  2. Using the HP Recovery Media:
    • Insert the created USB flash drive into your HP Pavilion x2.
    • Restart the laptop and access the system Startup menu by pressing esc and then f9 for boot options.
    • Select to boot from the USB flash drive and follow the on-screen instructions to start the recovery process.
  3. Changing the Boot Order (if necessary):
    • If your computer does not boot from the USB automatically, access the Boot Menu by quickly pressing esc, then f9 during startup and select the USB device from the list.
  4. Recovery Process:
    • Follow the on-screen instructions to use the recovery media to restore your laptop to its factory settings. This will involve wiping the existing data on your device.

Important Notes

  • Backup Data: Ensure any important data is backed up before you initiate recovery, as the factory reset will erase all personal data.
  • Battery Charge: For tablets or laptops with detachable keyboards, ensure the battery is charged above 70% before initiating recovery.
  • Assistance: If you cannot create or use recovery media, or if problems persist, you may need to contact HP Support for further assistance or for obtaining recovery discs.

By following these steps, you should be able to address the "missing file" error and successfully restore your HP Pavilion x2 to factory settings.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.
