HP ENVY Laptop - 17t-cg000 CTO
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I often notice that when I used the HP Support Assistant to update drivers in the past two years it states I need no driver update downloads. However, when I use my CCleaner Premium approximately every two weeks it has 3 to 6 drivers that need updating and automatically installs them for me. While reading no updates required, I also found that the Support Assistant will run Windows Updates and install updates that the HP Support Assistant detected I did not need. Last night I noticed inside Windows Updates it read one update failed to install Synaptics - HIDClass - 8/21/2019 12:00:00 AM - 19.5.35.47 (3). I don't know what that does or if I need it and no auto checker or human being can answer that question for me. I recently had a major malfunction with this laptop and Windows support used Media Creation Tool to do a fresh install of Windows 10 however it brilliantly installed Windows 11 which I hate and had to do a roll back to Windows 10 the same that Windows Security wasn't working on. I contacted a Windows support specialist again and he decided to ask me to trust him his fresh install would put only Windows 10 on my device. I checked it about 90 minutes later and I was locked out of my computer. The sign-in screen didn't work I couldn't do a thing. I had to purchase my own USB Flash Drive with Windows 10 on it and re-install it that way. So the computer has been through a lot recently and needed a huge amount of updates and the list of updates over 2 years was gone but I noticed that one failed update and nobody, no machine can tell me whether the computer needs it or not.

@POPSBARRY, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding Using HP Support Assistant for Driver Updates!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

HP Support Assistant is a powerful tool provided by HP that ensures your HP devices remain in top-notch performance. It helps you manage updates for drivers, BIOS, firmware, and software. There might be a few reasons why HP Support Assistant and other tools, like CCleaner Premium, report differing update statuses:

Driver Sources: HP Support Assistant particularly pulls updates directly from HP, ensuring that they're optimized for your specific hardware. CCleaner Premium, on the other hand, might source updates from a wider pool that includes component manufacturers rather than specific system configurations.

Update Frequency: Tools may have different algorithms to check for updates and different criteria for when an update is deemed necessary.

Windows Updates: Sometimes, HP Support Assistant may leverage Windows Update to deliver certain updates. Windows Update can also include driver updates not detected by HP Support Assistant yet.

How to Effectively Use HP Support Assistant

To ensure your device gets the necessary updates:

Regularly Run HP Support Assistant: Open HP Support Assistant and check for updates periodically.

  • Launch HP Support Assistant from the Start Menu or Taskbar.
  • On the Welcome screen, choose how you prefer to receive updates (Install important updates automatically when possible is recommended).
  • Click on My Device and then Updates to check for any pending updates.

Windows Update: Complement HP Support Assistant with regular checks using Windows Update.

  • Run Windows Update:
    • Open Settings from the Start Menu.
    • Navigate to Update & Security and select Windows Update.
    • Click Check for updates and install any new updates.

Hope this helps!

Take care, and have an amazing day!
