HP 250 G8 Notebook PC (1T4K4AV)
Ubuntu LTS

Hi! I have problem while running Ubuntu 24.04 on my Core i3 HP 250 G8 laptop. The problem is fans aren't working at all while i'm in Ubuntu, and while I am compiling large items (like OpenCV) my computer just crashes because of overheating issue. Fan always on is enabled BIOS. I have BIOS version F.63. The lm-sensor detects sucessfully the fans (and it says they are 0 RPM) under hp-isa-000 adapter, but I have no way to start them while using Linux. Note that I got laptop yesterday, and while it is in Windows, fans are normally working. This is huge problem for me, and at HP's side, this "lockdown" really isn't fair. On my second laptop, Lenovo, with same specs, everything is working right. Please help me. Thanks!

Thanks for very nice response! Btw, if you aren't working for HP, and you are just volunteer, why then you say "we don't have any support for it" (except if you are writting documentation, but I suppose not), in opposite to "they don't have any support for it"?

The solution to the problem is that I was using outdated kernel. Generic 6.8 for Ubuntu Noble, and solution is just update it using mainline bash tool (you can easly get it via apt), and now fans are working normally on kernel version 6.9.3-060903-generic.

Apart from a few Workstations that come with Linux distro preloaded, HP provides no support for Linux.

I mention this because with Windows, we can provide links to videos and HP Documents. We can provide links to HP diagnostic apps you can download and run on your PC. We can provide links to HP drivers and to HP BIOS updates, which you can also download and run on your PC. And, nearly everything useful can be done using an application or utility that HP will provide you for free.

For the general population of HP customers trying to use or install Linux, we have NONE of that. No diagnostics. No videos. No downloadable utilities or tools. And, once you get into Linux, you discover that you have to become VERY familiar with the command line to do anything complicated. We have no command line scripts or examples to provide you.

So when I recommend going to the support forum for your Linux distro, it is because THERE is where you will get the amount and kind of support you need.
