I have a Omnibook Ultra that the fingerprint sign-on is unreliable. Sometimes works most of the time it doesn't. The most baffling part it tells me to clean my finger or finger print key neither needs clean but when I try to re register my fingerprint it recognizes it right away. Definitely not dependable. Takes longer to log in because after I try my finger I need to then enter my pin.

Hi @cfedell,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

We understand that the fingerprint reader recognizes your fingerprint while registering it, but frequently fails at the Windows sign-in screen and asks you to clean your finger or the sensor.

To help us provide the correct model-specific driver and BIOS guidance, please share the complete HP OmniBook model name or product number. You can find this by pressing Fn + Esc in Windows. Please do not post the serial number publicly.

Meanwhile, try the following steps:
Remove and register the fingerprint again

  1. Select Start > Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options.
  2. Expand Fingerprint recognition (Windows Hello).
  3. Select Remove.
  4. Restart the notebook.
  5. Return to Sign-in options > Fingerprint recognition (Windows Hello) and select Set up.
  6. Follow the prompts to register the fingerprint again.
  7. While registering, gently press and lift the finger repeatedly, changing the angle slightly so Windows Hello captures the center and edges of the fingerprint.

We recommend keeping the finger clean and dry and using different angles during registration to capture the fingerprint completely. The PIN remains the backup sign-in method when fingerprint recognition is unavailable.

Check for Windows updates

  1. Select Start > Settings > Windows Update.
  2. Select Check for updates.
  3. Install all available updates, including any available optional driver updates.
  4. Restart the notebook and test the fingerprint reader again.

HP’s fingerprint troubleshooting guidance recommends setting up Windows Hello again and running Windows Update if fingerprint sign-in remains unavailable or unreliable.

If the issue continues, let us know the complete OmniBook model/product number, the Windows version, and whether the problem began after a Windows or BIOS update. We can then provide the appropriate model-specific driver and BIOS steps.

Take care and have an amazing day!

I'm an HP Employee.
